Pros

Some employees are great people, whole foods close across the street, easily accessible from public transit

Cons

First thing you need to do is realize that this place is in fact toxic as many other reviews here say. It might seem like these are just disgruntled past employees but the truth of the matter is that they are normal everyday people who had enough of this place and want to warn others to stay away. Starting at the top you have the CEO of OPSWAT. He shows textbook narcissistic behavior and runs the company as such. He is constantly rude and disrespectful to anybody who works directly with him. He does not care about industry standards or best practices at all. Everything needs to be done his way (often cutting corners) or you will get fired for trying to do the right thing. He will humiliate and yell at employees instead of talking to them like a civilized adult. He constantly sends out emails that are either threatening to fire you (or your whole team) or the emails are indecipherable as to what he is electronically yelling at you about. Most people at the company feel he is doing a terrible job as CEO but nobody dares say anything to him as they don't want to get fired. Even the C level executives feel this way but there is nothing they can do so everybody deals with it as best they can. Moving down to upper management. There are plenty of managers at OPSWAT but that is just their title since all the decisions are made by the CEO. Do not expect to come here and be able to contribute your ideas and change anything. I've lost count of how many Marketing and Sales directors they've tried to hire and have consequently fired within 3 months of hiring said person. The turn over ration here is very high and employees now make a game at the end of the year of counting how many people from the holiday video are no longer with the company. Some managers are great and some managers are terrible. If you have one of the good managers they will try as best they can to shield you from all the politics and allow you to do your job. If you get one of the bad managers you will get no direction as to what is wanted of you and as they change what they said before you will get punished for doing what you were asked to do initially or for trying to follow best practices. The products are fairly successful but most people in the company don't think they actually work as well as advertised and seem to have little faith in them. Workers here are generally underpaid and overworked. We get a very limited number of holidays, and PTO. There is no sick leave and you are expected to use PTO if you are out sick or you can simply come into the office sick. If you actually try to use your PTO you are looked down on and there is a high chance that something will go wrong while you are gone and when you get back you will be in deep trouble. HR says they are transparent but they are not doing a great job at that. We have a huge backlog of bugs that need to be addressed but we're constantly trying to add new features instead of fixing issues. Our release process is terrible (Metadefender line) and we never get a release out on time due to last minute requirement changes. Our QA is abysmal. If you can even call what we do QA. The best advice I can give any developer thinking of working here is to leave all you've learned about best practices at the door. OPSWAT has their own way of doing things. There are countless reasons to not work here and most people here are constantly trying to "escape" as they like to call it. Job titles here come easy but the pay will not match the title. The work/life balance here is the same as you would expect from a fresh start up but OPSWAT is fairly established company. Nevertheless you will be expected to work longer than average days and check emails constantly when not at work. The CEO is obsessed with his company and you as an employee are expected to feel the same way. If you are not drinking the koolaid and have a life outside of work, you should understand that this will be also frowned upon and that while you're working here OPSWAT should be your life. tl:dr - if you have no other options and need to pay the bills, then by all means accept a job here. But don't stop looking after that because you'll soon be trying to escape OPSWAT along with the rest of them. Try to avoid dealing with the CEO as all costs. He is a bad man and working with him for long periods of time is actually bad for your health.

We have seen our CEO’s management style drive the betterment of the company. His success as a leader is evident in the fact that we are a private company that is consistently profitable and that we continue to grow our employee base. Naturally, certain management styles do not work for everyone; however, his style seems to be working nicely for the company as a whole. Unfortunately, our Glassdoor reviews to-date do not identify the many positive aspects of our company. We have seen that many dissatisfied employees have used Glassdoor as a venting forum instead of facilitating a more productive face-to-face conversation with our Human Resources Team, which may have afforded the opportunity to alleviate and resolve issues. We have also observed that employees who have positive experiences tend to be less likely to write reviews because they’re satisfied, and are not as compelled to write a review. Frustration and disappointment can be more powerful emotions that require an outlet, whereas satisfaction and contentment do not require anything else other than keeping on the path that led to engaging with these feelings in the first place.

Pros

Great product, experienced product management, and engineering teams.

Cons

I've worked here for a significant amount of time, and since hiring new marketing leadership (which wasn't even that long ago), myself and several others have seen a breakdown in processes, and wasteful spending. I'm surprised at senior management for hiring individuals who clearly do not have the experience required to properly run a successful marketing team. It's really discouraging. I hope it gets better, but I have my doubts.

We are sorry you feel that way. We would hope that you would speak up and talk about any issues with the processes you might see. We definitely value open communication and work as a team at OPSWAT. We must admit we do find this review rather odd...and quite frankly suspicious. Our marketing management has decades of experience. On a personal note I have seen great strides the marketing department has been achieving so I really have to disagree with the assessment. This is in big part to the more seasoned professionals we have been strategically adding to that group. Please feel free to talk to HR confidentially or talk to any of the marketing team openly. I am sure they would welcome any feedback you can give.

Pros

There are many great, hard working people who work at OPSWAT on the engineering team.

Cons

By far the most unpleasant work environment I have ever worked in. I never knew what the plan was, as it changed constantly and without notice. We were expected to fix code (we are not developers, we are writers) and read the mind of our manager. I was also yelled at numerous times in meetings. I was usually too shocked to even know how to respond. I pleaded with my manager to simply communicate with us as to what he wanted done, to no avail. I spent my time there trying to find another job. Avoid at all costs.

This seems like an issue that you experienced with your direct manager, and that it does not represent the company as a whole. We value the importance of training our managers how to effectively lead. We will keep your comments in mind for future management training initiatives.
