OPSWAT is a terrible place to work

Pros

- Free snacks - Free soda (1 per day, anyway) - Nice neighborhood

Cons

- Management is mercurial and short-sighted - Company culture is stiff and paranoid - Lack of consistent leadership or direction - The CEO micromanages like a crazy person There is a pretty obvious disparity between the positive and negative reviews for OPSWAT here on Glassdoor. Strangely enough, the positive reviews often seem to take aim at the negative reviewers as if they are weird outliers, not representative of what’s “really” happening in this company at all. That seems odd at best, disingenuous at worst. Leaving that aside, here’s a sample of my own experience working at OPSWAT: I was working from home on a project for OPSWAT at 8pm on a Sunday night when I got an email from the CEO asking me what I had produced in one very specific area of my job that quarter. I gave him the answer he’d asked for, and he responded that what I was doing wasn’t sufficient ROI for what he was paying me, and warned that I had better step it up if I wanted to keep my job. I reminded him that I worked in more than just that one specific area during any given day, and he replied back that he “didn’t like my tone,” and that we’d meet about it the following day. Keep in mind that this all happened at 8:00pm on a Sunday night, and that I was doing OPSWAT work on my own time because I wanted what I was working on to be great. I went in the next and day so I could look the CEO in the face as I quit. That’s the “hands-on” management style that some other reviewers are talking about. I suppose that some people might call it “enthusiasm”, but I think most people would recognize it as micromanagement, a lack of adequate planning and an inability to delegate appropriately. No matter what you decide to call it, it’s a haphazard and abrasive management style, and results in the kind of mind-boggling turnover rate that OPSWAT endures. I worked at OPSWAT for nearly 2 years, and received 2 promotions with considerable pay bumps during that time, which was nice. I also had three heads of my department either quit or get fired while I was there, and had 80% of the team I started with quit within a single year. That’s not an exaggeration, and there is a good reason for it; the CEO is a tyrant. OPSWAT’s got the chaotic feeling of a startup without any of the fun or profit. A company this old should not still be enduring growing pains like this, but that seems like exactly what is going on at OPSWAT. Do yourself a favor and look at jobs elsewhere. OPSWAT is a mess.

Pros

None. There is nothing about positive about OPSWAT that you wouldn't find at every other company. Hence, there's absolutely no reason to work here at all.

Cons

The CEO is terrible. He would rather be right to win and argument than grow the company. And unfortunately, it cascades down through the organization. He micro manages like crazy, changes his mind all the time and is a horrible communicator. His accent is super hard to understand and his emails are barely coherent. You'll think I'm exaggerating until you get one. No sentence structure or punctuation. Words spelled phonetically, but by someone with a super thick accent. Its kind of funny thinking back on it (FREEDOM!) but you'll want to stab yourself in the eye with a fork when you're actually trying to get some work done and then get incoherent feedback from him. Smart guy, yes. Hard working, yes. As smart as he thinks, no. Appreciative of others hard work, no. Every task is easy to him. But then when he tries to get his hands dirty... oh boy, he produces complete garbage. Most difficult thing is that he rearranges facts to suit whatever his current thinking is. He literally makes up stats and claims that other people in organization are asking him for whatever his crazy pet idea of the day is. Its like second grade school mean girl manipulation. And then he is so cheap. So cheap. Totally underfunds projects. And has the patience of a toddler. Somethings take more than a few weeks. But even when he agrees to a longer term project, he get antsy and wonders why it isn't done early. He is the least self aware person I've ever met.

Pros

there are so many dedicated and passionate individuals who are very talented and helpful. They are the stars of the company and real reason why the organization is successful

Cons

Most of upper management is brilliant and talented, but the problem is that some of these people are handcuffed by the top most leadership and cannot disagree or go against the grain involving decisions made at the top. The moment there is some disagreement over directions or decisions, these individuals are removed. In other words, you cannot go against the elite members of the company or your life there will be more miserable. These so called elites are condescending to subordinates and make it so difficult to work there. The moment you have a different opinion or recommend changes you know is beneficial for the company, you are removed and no longer needed. You are no longer valued and are treated as an outcast. I have worked at so many companies and I have never experienced this type of toxic mindset displayed by these senior leaders. If you join this company, you will no doubt experience this same unpleasant environment and find yourself looking for work elsewhere. Don't let this happen to you. It will really be the worst career move you have ever made. Consider this a warning from someone who has regretted working here. There are plenty of places to work where you will be truly valued and respected. This is not one of them.
