Pros

The people doing the actual work at Frontiers are brilliant, so hard working (despite not being fully recognised for this work) and friendly. With all of the tough times that this company has been through in the last year, these teams have been supportive of each other and without their dedication, UM would have nothing.

Cons

Upper Management There isn't much to like about upper management at Frontiers, they are the complete reason for the downfall of Frontiers. They have been very quick to place blame elsewhere without taking a long look at their actions. How can you possibly blame your specialists for failures in business critical actions when UM made the changes to these processes in the first place. Their micromanagement of the teams has given any mid-level managers a lack of purpose and if you don't want to be a yes man to that level of UM you won't be given any opportunity at promotions and will be considered "difficult". Their extreme lack of communcation with the company, whilst stating that they want the feedback is at best funny and at worst the reason why so many are leaving. Ignoring the reputational damage from external stakeholders and now the employees will be the main cause of the downfall of Frontiers, and UM need to start taking actions quickly. Ambitious Targets There is a difference between being ambitious and being delusional. Sadly, the targets at Frontiers went from one to the other. The targets are completely unachievable so therefore lack all purpose. Perhaps start with what was achieved last year and build upon it, rather than what we want to achieve and working backwards. Lack of Development Opportunities Once upon a time, Frontiers championed its 1 hour a week development time, this has long since gone. Chances of getting promotions are so slim, so if you're looking to develop your career or skills this is not the place for you. Project and Pilot overload There are always far too many projects and pilots being run at Frontiers with such tight timeframes. These projects are desperate to show an improvement, when with the little data available, they can't show this. You as a manager are expected to keep up with these pilots and show to your team that you believe in this change, and "make it work" even if you know that this isn't the right change for your team or journals.

Feedback from employees and external stakeholders is important to us - we gather this through various channels and use it to inform all our decisions. However, we know there is room for improvement and we're putting in place new measures in 2024 to listen even more carefully to feedback, and to communicate with employees in an even clearer way. Pros

Work from home, nice teammates.

Cons

The company has been in such a state of disarray for the past 2 years and has continued to make bad decisions upon bad decisions leading to increased workload, nonsensical guidelines, redundant actions and now massive lay offs.

Pros

The pay, benefits, and remote working arrangements are very comfortable and competitive.

Frontiers, well Frontiers is a bit different. Let me paint you a picture... You've met all your immediate colleagues (virtually, of course) , the training wheels have come off, and you finally feel like you (sort of) know what you're talking about in meetings. Then, you're asked to join a project group - hurrah, your day of recognition has come! The project group starts off well. You meet and greet, you start talking about your objectives, people throw around ideas, and you feel like your actually contributing to something bigger and more exciting than your day to day. You crack on with doing the thing the project set out to do. Yeah perhaps it’s quite ambitious, but you know what, the group is going give it a damn good crack anyway. A month passes by, and you hear something odd. The project lead drops into conversation that 'senior leadership would like…', and you're left a bit puzzled. Hang on, what do they know about [insert your specific field of expertise]? And why are they taking an interest in this pretty mundane thing? Next thing you know the project lead is talking about 'the next steps' which you could have sworn you've never seen before. The project scope and objectives have been completely redefined, your work scrapped. Nobody can explain why, and perhaps more worryingly, nobody questions it. And you're left thinking, wait a minute, what just happened? Am I imagining things? Sadly, this is not a one off occurrence. Senior leadership have developed a culture of followership which does not question and does not challenge. It is a one way street. There is much talk about listening to your feedback. But it is, in the most part, not genuine. While there are clearly some areas that have middle management worth their salt, I was unfortunate to experience that unsavoury flavour of kick-down and kiss-up boss. A person like this can disempower a whole department, sow chaos and confusion, leaving you desperately treading water to stay afloat, meanwhile waiting for the next bomb to drop. Yes, the paycheck is shiny. And yes, you can get to work from the comfort of your own home, with your best furry friend to keep you company. But seriously, save yourself the pain. Your blood-pressure and therapist will thank you for it.
