Pros

Yearly bonus, can’t think of many others.

Cons

Unorganised chaos, nobody takes responsibility for anything, mega ‘clicky’ management. Have to be special friends with the above to progress. Joined the company three years ago, was told how amazing we were etc (I still semi agree from a customer perspective, but there are many unhappy guys in my area). Massive expectation. The company expect an hour of travel in their van before and after my shift. Works out over 50 hours per week, so really tired once home, only really have time to eat and go to bed, ready to be up at 5.30am the next day. I have never felt pressure like it in a job, I’m feeling anxious and unsettled. Hoping to leave soon but waiting for the right opportunity to come along. Heard of other guys in the area being offered a job, then hearing nothing from the management in the department for weeks, then finding out the job offered wasn’t available in the area, so more chaos and playing with mental health. I’m currently unsure where all these recent changes have come from, whether it’s just my local area or nationwide. I have been a big admirer of Greg and his vision for change and hope it hasn’t come from the very top. We’re definitely feeling it at the bottom though

Pros

Free cereal and good office location

Cons

The worst job I have ever had. Controlling management, poor support for staff, poor pay when compared to industry standard. Limited in how to help customers. Was given a stern talking to for discussing pay with colleagues, and had no one to report this to as no HR department. Some Ops managers have a years rent paid where energy specialists are denied pay rises until they complete two specialisms. Colleagues have poor mental health due to lack of support but the company preaches it is one big ‘family’. Extremely toxic environment that is hidden underneath free cereal and booze.

Hello there, Thanks for your feedback. I'm sorry for the delay in responding, had some issues getting admin access to Glassdoor! From your review, I think that you are still working with us as you don't mention having left the business. Although you are correct that we don't have an HR department as such, there are lots of people around the business that you can speak to openly and honestly so I really hope that you will reach out to myself (or someone else if there's someone else you would feel more comfortable speaking to). It would be great to have a proper conversation about this and also to get some more detailed feedback from you if you were willing to give this. Please do reach out to me on Slack or by email to lynne.higgins@octoenergy.com. Lynne Higgins Head Of Operations Octopus Energy

Pros

Relaxed dress code. Good working hours. Good incentives. Unlimited additional holidays to the discretion of management.

Cons

They have No HR Department, this has bred a culture of people especially management, trying to get away with anything they can, there has been, bullying, nepotism, sexual harassment and more scandals on my team. Left with noone to report any incidents to because the management are either involved or higher ups will cover for them and brush things under the rug. Really mismanaged, and you won't get anywhere based on merit, only if you know the managers outside of work. They pretend to be progressive, and have a relaxed work environment, but everyone is treated like children and micromanaged to the point where they are pulled up for having a toilet break too close to another person's. They pretend to care about mental health but all that is offered is a channel on Slack Application, which makes it impossible to book a chat/course with a counsellor. Management never turn up to work, and the management of upwards of 4 big teams could be left to one team leader, and left to struggle without help.

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review, I really appreciate you doing this. You are correct that we don't have a formal HR department at Octopus Energy. Team members should feel empowered to reach out to any leader in the business if they are unhappy with anything that they see/hear happening in the workplace. There are no barriers for anyone in the team to approach anyone within the organisation with any concerns. I'm ultimately responsible for the IBA team and really sorry if you didn't feel able to do reach out or if wasn't made clear to you that you could. From your review I can see that you are no longer with by us, but I would like to reassure you that we've taken steps to address this.
