Pros

Business sector is very interesting; flexible working practices; pension is good.

Cons

Very regionalised business , struggling to have global view for clients; executive team (apart from 2) have not worked in senior positions in other organisations and so lack strategic leadership - still very reactive and tactical. With proper investment could have a business twice the size and twice as profitable.

Pros

Possibly the best thing about the company is its people. Very interesting, friendly and for the most part agreeable people. The culture is more employee-centered than most institutions, and this makes a lot of sense for a company whose greatest assets are its people. Flexible employment schemes, telecommuting, ability to move between offices and a decent work-life balance are part of the larger picture of this employee-centered culture. The work is pretty interesting and offers you a steep learning curve in the beginning, and the opportunity to meet a huge variety of interesting people. As in most companies, the curve flattens gradually but there are enough opportunities to move sideways across departments within the company.

Cons

For most departments and positions, the pay is inadequate for the qualifications of the employees, who can earn better salaries outside. The bonus scheme has been reevaluated to address this concern, but base salaries still remain low. Vertical movement within the company is somewhat limited, and being promoted takes as much luck and politics as skill and performance. In some departments, qualified people are stuck at the same positions for long periods, while in others young stars rise quickly. It is sad to see qualified people get stuck and lose their motivations.

Pros

+Really interesting and diverse work, dealing with major companies as clients +Diverse staff - colleagues come from fascinating backgrounds - this enriches the company's culture (journalists, academics, security personnel, compliance specialists, etc.) +Genuinely talented and caring middle management +Potential to provide innovative solutions to clients

Cons

-Opaque pay structure, which results in people with the same experience, same work ethic, and capacity being paid wildly different salaries. Overall, the salaries are far from being market competitive. -Opaque promotion mechanisms. People are being held back for no clear personal or business reason, while promotion procedures sometimes feel like a moving target. There is a general lack of structure for professional development and growth in some departments. Even really ambitious and motivated people eventually give up in trying to understand how it works. -The company has lost a large number of junior staff in the last year, largely due to the above points. Instead of regrouping and developing a better approach on how to retain talented staff, the company has started raising non-compete clauses against junior staff as a punitive measure for those leaving and a warning for those considering leaving.

Pros

I really enjoyed the people I worked with. Also had some amazing exposure to working with some of the biggest companies in the world. Projects were very interesting and I was given lots of autonomy in my work.

Cons

The upper management did not really listen to suggestions about how to improve the organization. The consultants were not well paid given the level of effort that was expected and given.

Pros

Smart, driven people with interesting backgrounds Ask forgiveness, not permission High energy Interesting content - you're always learning something worthwhile

Cons

Salaries are low compared to the competition. It's quite true there is an "old boys club" mentality, although that is less of a handicap than you might think. It's often macho without being particularly exclusionary.

Pros

Usually has decent working hours, small team so there is a decent variety of work, opportunity to take part in each stage of the project life cycle.

Cons

Poor management, lack of real expertise, sales focus, not family friendly, inconsistent goals that change with changes in leadership, poor staff retention, brain drain. I did not feel I learned that much from the people I worked with, there was very much a "work it out for yourself" mentality.

Pros

The people and the culture are great to work with and learn from and you have the ability to get involved in some very interesting work. The management are very approachable and listen to the employees. The opportunity to move around within the company is also valuable.

Cons

The salaries at Control Risks are not known to be at the same level of some of the competitors but they are fair.
