Pros

Lovely people and colleagues. Flexible work and wfh. Open Access vision / Kamila (ceo) is very inspiring. Good pension/salary sacrifice. Good benefits (not including pay)

Cons

Direction missing somewhat. Workload just gets added to without proper solutions. Constant introduction of new workflows when still adjusting to existing ones. The role doesnt progress or mature naturally into anything. You either advance into journal manager roles (for a lot they do this too early and then lack proper managerial skills) or stagnate as a specialist but without formal recognition of your increasing skills or retention to the the company. No external networking available (eg conferences or in person visits). Career progression out of Frontiers a bit of a leap in the dark. Seems to be a lot of nepotism in the promotions. Pay reviews - backward, biased to cis white males, lack funding to properly reward high achievers, controlled by upper management who see you as numbers not people. So infrequent you can mature a lot and still not be recognised. Chaotic structure -loads of teams with poor internal communication, struggling to adapt from small-medium company to international company. Expanded very quickly without the sufficient infrastructure or forward planning. Targets applied in a blanket approach from upper management who have no idea about the specific journals or the communities we have to work with. Like they're on another planet! I was going to refer a friend but really can't bring myself to recommend them to a place where they don't value or recognise talent, skill or high performance. Numbers on a spreadsheet is all we are now.

Pros

Great work culture in my team. Frontiers' mission is actually commendable. 29 days holiday per year plus yearly bonus. Working remotely 100% if you want to plus ability to work abroad too (90 days pa in EU and 30 days pa outside of EU). It is a hugely successful company, becoming the 3rd largest publisher already after only being approx 15 years old.

Cons

Transitioning into a large company from a start-up and it seems to have a lot of the same problems of other companies like this i.e. top management becoming more distant/remote and less aware of the on-the-ground problems. This is now beginning to show in some places. Nepotism can be found in certain places which is not ideal.
