Pros

Similar to other reviews here, the immediate colleagues are the main reason to stay. People working directly with scientists are passionate about doing things right. Fully remote position with good flexibility. Decent benefits and salary.

Cons

The reasons why I left were a lack of career progression and meaningful personal development. My main responsibilities involved answering emails, preparing outreach campaigns, hosting video calls, and managing Special Issues. The only personal growth that would align with these workflows was simply getting more efficient at doing them. You are encouraged for personal development but any newly learned skills are incompatible with stagnant workflows and legacy software used to this day. With such an environment, you are left feeling that you are learning things for the sake of learning or developing skills for when you quit. By the end, it felt like I was working in a glorified call centre and I ran out of patience to wait until this changed. It did not help that there were no changes to my salary for over two years. In addition, the redundancies and reorganizations (yes, multiple) of the company in 2024 introduced a clear change in work culture. The goal of "making science open' was replaced with the battle to keep the graphs going up with little consideration for scientists or employees. There is no clear vision for the company in the long or short term. This lack of vision also affects relationships with scientists, as even on my last day, I could not tell them why they should work with Frontiers and I struggle to say why you should too.

Thanks for your thoughts and that you valued the flexibility we offer. Last year we introduced progression pathways to provide every individual with even clearer growth opportunities and a roadmap for your career advancement. We're sorry to hear you weren't able to benefit from this. It's surprising to hear that you felt there was no clear vision. At the end of last year we documented our five-year vision for Frontiers and developed clear strategies for how we'll get there. More than 60 managers in the company were involved in the process and it has been communicated to all employees across various channels.

It used to be a nice place to work for

Pros

Good working hours, fantastic wfh adaptation, extremely nice people to work with, one of the most noble missions that a company can have.

Cons

Frontiers used to be one of the best places to work for. However, things gradually started getting worse after a certain point. My review here is a bit of a repetition to what others have already said: 1) continuous changes in our processes that after a certain point it was happening on a bi-weekly basis. 2)Policies in the peer review process that started becoming more and more aggressive towards our audiences.3) lack of transparency from senior management became the status quo for us (e,g saying or even promising something on a departmental meeting and then a few weeks later doing the exact opposite), 4) micro-management policies became the bread and butter constant for everyone by senior management. In general at this point it is such a pity that things ended up like this. It used to be such a nice place to work at.

Thank you for your feedback. It's great to hear you value our mission, which remains as important to us today as ever. Our strategies and decisions are always driven by this mission and we continuously adapt to ensure excellence. This means we try new things and pivot quickly, while we simultaneously remain committed to improving communication, refining peer review policies, and fostering a supportive work environment.

Pros

Most of the people are nice until you get to anyone in leadership.

Cons

Terrible culture. Terrible management and leadership. Micro manage everything. The worst off shore development company I have experienced.

Thank you for sharing. We are sorry to hear about your experience with management, especially as we had a very good management recommendation score in our latest employee survey. We have however just launched another leadership training program to enable collaborative and autonomous teams.
