Do Not Work Here

Pros

None that come to mind.

Cons

This company may attract the brightest and talented, but they won't stay there for long. Ruthless management, who would do well to remember that their employees are the 'face of the business' and should treat them respectfully. Unreasonable demands (expect to work far past your end time, with no reward) and no appropriate training. You are thrown into the deep end and there is an immense demand to work under pressure with zero support. Overall, appeared to be the textbook definition of a toxic atmosphere - everybody is out for themselves. 0/10, AVOID.

Thanks for your feedback, it is very important for as we improve as a company. We're sorry that your experience with us was not as you hoped. Our onboarding practice is something that we are very proud of, it's become a very thorough process over the last few years as our company has grown, so we are very sad to hear the support you initially received was not to your standards. We would appreciate it if you would email us at careers@frontiersin.org and we can hopefully look into your issues deeper to try and rectify them for the future.

Pros

lots of spare time and free mental space as the job is not exactly demanding

Cons

Unqualified personnel. Most people do not have even an undergraduate degree in the field they are working in, let alone a higher level degree as any respectable publishing house would. Most people there are coming from freelance jobs in the humanities with no experience in either science or publishing. These people need to make decisions on subfields within exact sciences, use and understand fairly complex software and often scientitic terms whose meaning they cannot understand. This might explain why scientists get spammed with research topic requests on completely irrelevant fields and the low quality of the papers coming out. Should any respectable scientist know who is editing their manuscripts, they would stop submitting anything to Frontiers. This is the only publishing house that hires people without a background in their respective field. Moreover, being there for longer is rewarded, and given that the people who stay are generally the ones who did not receive competing offers, most of middle to high management is formed of people who did not receive a job anywhere else. These people will willingly block any incoming talent that has any interest in publishing or technical abilities, be it by either blocking their projects or sending passive-aggressive emails correcting commas or tabs, as previous reviews pointed out. If your life ambitions and abilities are in any way above average and have achieved anything worthwhile in the past careerwise, and are still working here for more than a few months, you have only yourself to blame. Also, salary is extremely low for Switzerland which explains the level of the people accepting the position. That said, many of these people without a scientific/publishing background might do better in a different kind of position that does not require decision making at the forefront of knowledge, and this would allow qualified personnel to replace them as well.

Pros

Previous reviews are right, the pros and cons of the company are simple. The biggest pro are your peers, a kind, clever, international bunch work who are hardworking, welcoming, interesting, great bakers and great fun! It makes you want to do your job and it is what counts for your motivation.

Cons

The big con is the senior management in many departments, who just do not have experience or willingness to gain skills in managing people. Things aren't helped by HR, who dodge responsibility time and again. The net result is that departures have become regular, and morale is low.
