Pros

Remote It’s over Won’t have to see my boss anymore

Cons

AFTER TWO YEARS I GOT FIRED IN THE MOST GEART WRENCHING AND CRUEL WAY. My boss who is based in NY messaged me on Slack to have “a quick meeting.” I’m based in Mexico and was surprised so I naively went to the office ONLY TO FIND TWO LAYERS AND MY BOSS ON A COMPUTER SCREEN ON ZOOM. She later fired me saying they “no longer needed the Mexico based staff.” I was shocked. After a one minute call and her being unable to look me straight in the eye she finished the call. THEN THE REAL MALTREATMENT TOOK PLACE. As I was in tears while trying to make jokes (I do that when I’m nervous) I asked the layers what was next. They handed me a contract and I began to read it. It said how the work relationship was over and that both parties agreed. Well I agree with the reality of being fired so it seemed fine to me. Then, as tears ran down my face one of the layers PLACED A PEN IN MY HAND and urged me to sign. For a split second I thought something was off. But then decided I was wrong because as “YOUNG, ETHICAL, MILLENNIAL, INTERNATIONAL” company wouldn’t do anything sketchy. Why would they want to screw me over? It made no sense, so I signed. Later I found out that I signed that I was “QUITTING” which made it so they wouldn’t have to pay my 3 month severance. I got fired in December of last year just before getting a yearly bonus which I never received. I spoke with a layer who said that they definitely did something wrong but that they were clearly experts and suing them would be more costly and not worth it. What’s awful is that the company which is based in Spain and has employees all over the world calls themselves a “GLOBAL FAMILY.” I am almost sure that they would not have behaved this was towards an employee in the US or Europe. But they did so in Mexico. They then fired the other Mexico based team that worked on US markets. I then found out that another Mexico college who did the same job as me literally got paid twice as much. So I definitely believe in checking in with colleges about this. I then sent my now ex boss 5 EMAILS ASKING FOR A LETTER OF RECOMMENDATION ONLY FOR HER TO COMPLETELY IGNORE ME. This was very cruel and awful behavior and speaks volumes. It severely affected my mental health and made me depressed. I just want to make it clear that I am not angry over getting fired. I am angry about the way I was treated during this process. They treated me like trash. My boss and so called “editor” was incredibly hands off and canceled 95% of our one on ones. During my two years working at the company we never had any meaningful review. Her only notes where on making the title of each article more click baity and about the memes I put on IG. I honestly think her title should be manager because she clearly doesn’t care about the quantity of the work. She would only praise reel views and stats.

Pros

Fast paced working environment. Great group of people to work with. Everyone worked hard and for the most part had positive energy, even though the company was going through a lot of changes.

Cons

Company dynamic changed a few months into my job and led to high turnover and low morale. No management structure. Managing an office from overseas does not work.

Pros

A lot of travel Interesting coworkers

Cons

A ton of work with not nearly enough pay-- title was "associate producer" but the work was of a senior or executive producer HR is in Spain, and if you're in the US they take days or weeks to respond and when they do it's highly impersonal. You feel more like you're speaking with customer service than HR They try to do everything as cheaply as humanly possible. My job was often negotiating with vendors to do work dirt cheap, with absolutely no care for the quality The higher ups are pretty disrespectful and unsupportive-- I had to ask my manager multiple times to actually have a 1:1 with me within the first month of work there I had requested religious holidays off from my manager (3 months in advance) and she informed me it wasn't possible because it "coincides with an opening night". Had to run this request up through HR for them to realize it actually wasn't legal for them to ask that of me.
