Pros

I loved working for CSM until Ascension took over. There were, of course, always things to complain about like the difficult patient population we commonly see and the workload of a nurse. But overall, I loved all my coworkers, my manager had a great open-door policy and was very approachable, very flexible work schedule, etc.

Cons

Since Ascension took over, our staffing has been cut, our staffing grid has been altered to give us a skeleton crew at best. The only time we're well staffed is if the floor is full. If we are at 75% capacity, we are struggling to do our best. Just because there are fewer patients DEFINITELY doesn't mean their acuity is less. Nurses, PCAs, even doctors, are leaving left and right. The last few weeks it has been basically expected that we will need to mandate at least one staff member per shift, we've lost so many people. On top of this, we are told we need to do BETTER. We need better HCAHP scores, answer call lights quicker, JC is coming, do better! But here is less staff....They are running this once great place into the ground.

Pros

5% matching for the retirement plan, plus a pension after 5 years, roughly 23 days vacation a year, including holidays, typical medical benefits, etc. Nice working environment, friendly co-workers, immediate management is responsive, yearly raises if you qualify.

Cons

The raises are not guaranteed, and they tend to be very minimal even when you get them. There are limited opportunities for advancement. Ascension is selling/contracting their revenue cycle team out to a company called R1 in fall of 2017. At that time all of the benefits listed above will change. There will be no pension. In fact, it seems like all of the benefits will be reduced with the new company. Ascension has treated me well while I've been with them but I'm a small fish in a big pond. The end goal with Ascension seems to be money. They treat their employees well but that's not really their priority. At the end of the day as an employee I have a difficult time trusting the company.

From family atmosphere to the Inquisition in 10 years

Pros

I loved the patients, their families and almost every co-worker, but management left much to be desired. Enjoyed the hard work and achieved much satisfaction in taking care of patients and their families, felt good at the end of the day when I knew I had helped make a difference in someone's life.

Cons

Some leaders were overbearing, immature, petty and vindictive. When I began my employment, the atmosphere was family-like and the Lourde's Mission statement really meant something. After Ascension took over, that mission statement went out the window along with a great deal of integrity and core values. I watched as one after another caring, talented, and wonderful nurses, aides and ancillary staff left for positions elsewhere. Finally, after nearly 10 years in a position I had loved, I left and didn't look back. I still miss some of my co-workers, but overall it was the right choice for me.
