when mediocrity becomes norm

Pros

Good products, good customer experience. Good strategy and market positioning

Cons

This is one of the companies that one is looking forward to, and as soon as it is done, the disappointment becomes evident. The fundamental cause of abandonment of a company by an employee is the quality of its boss and this is precisely the weakest point of the company. Mediocre management (with exceptions) who only care about their professional career and very little of their subordinates. Dictatorship to the extreme and poor work atmosphere. Mobbing, concealment of facts and all kinds of maneuvers not recommended. They say that there was an HR person who tried the change ... he left the company without achieving it. Everything will remain the same until they renew the management. Staff turnover is very high and labor complaints are abundant. Anyway. what a pity...

Pros

VMware is well established company and brand, well positioned in the market. It's a big american corporation, and gives the opportunity to a lot of people to work here, learn and progress in their careers. And not the traditional corporation, in general a more relaxed environment and people willing to help. It has over the top benefits: - Gym membership - Lunch card on top of your salary - Insurance and dental insurance - 40 hours a year for social service and match your donations to charities - Team building activities - 22 days of paid holidays a year, that you can take when you want. They invest a lot in people's careers, there is always budget for training. You always get the tools you need to work (brand new laptop, 2 monitors, software licenses). VMware cares for their people. The Ireland office was closed and the people affected were relocated to the office in Barcelona, offered another job in Ireland or other office or got the indemnification. Another prove that they care about the people is higher management (senior VPs, directors, country managers, etc) visiting the office. The growth of the office has been exponential, every few weeks there is people joining.

Cons

- There are periods when there is too much training going on. Specially because of VMware always innovating and developing new products that it might be overwhelming. - Change is constant. - The holidays are subject to manager's approval. And there are periods when it's not possible to take holidays (end of quarter for example).

Pros

It's a start up within a big corporation, which has its perks. There's no lack of budget and we get support from other business units and there is a lot of heart and passion behind this project. The team overall is great to work with and a lot has been acomplished within a short timeframe. Benefits are way above the Barcelona standard. Ticket restaurant that goes on top of your salary instead of deducted, health insurance for you and your family, good leave program that gets increased with time.. and the pay is also great.

Cons

A start up has its cons, its very chaotic and no one know what they're doing. We will be moving locations soon and its going to be challenging, so if you're not up to an ever changing place this isnt for you. Management is young but the director has very old school ideas that clash with the vibe they're trying to set.
