Pros

Great benefits, while most of them have left for greener pastures, still some great people at the company.

Cons

Youll notice a common theme in most of the negative reviews, and it revolves around leadership. And it's 100 percent accurate. They have bad leadership top to bottom, some are managers who simply have the role because of company politics, or because they used to work with the director at another company. Speaking of politics, this is a company where they seem to play favorites and only want a select few doing well on the AE side. but the rest are trying hard but struggling because leadership is only giving good leads to certain people. For example: A rep went on a trip alone to a HR conference where she got to demo upwork to people and meet and greet new new customers. She came back and kept all 12 leads for her self, the company didnt think that maybe should spread the wealth a bit. The product is something youre going to have to REALLY buy into because even in this current remote work climate, and the company being around for years, people still dont know upwork and upwork cant seem to find the right messaging for its product. Which means endless time spending having to educate the customer at ever step of the process on the value. This isnt a relationship building sales position, it's a having to drag customers across the finish line relationship. Its that much of a pain to sell. The company has a very turnover rate in most departments except for the Enterprise Account Management position. The BDR program is the absolute worst BDR program in Chicago. Anyone looking to start in sales, stay as far a way as possible. A new BDR rep is quitting every other week. It's an absolute dumpster fire that has been let down by terrible and inexperienced leadership

Thank you very much for providing your valuable feedback on your experience during your time at Upwork. We are sorry to hear about any negative feelings during your time here. As you noted, change absolutely a big part of our company and our sales team in particular has experienced rapid growth and with that some growing pains. Our team is highly competitive with big targets and while we are comfortable with our attrition, we value our employees and will take your feedback seriously as we further build our training and mentorship programs for the team. Thanks again for the review, and we'll make the senior leadership team aware of your feedback. - Upwork HR

Pros

My coworkers were great - I got along well with my teammates and people are generally happy to help each other out. Good perks and benefits as well.

Cons

As mentioned in other reviews, the sales organization is constantly changing. Midway through 2020, there was a reorg that effectively demoted 20ish employees into a position that was inferior to the one that they had been hired for. Leadership says "change is constant", however the frequency of change resembles a small, scrappy startup rather than a publicly traded company that has been around for over 10 years - there seems to be no cohesive, long-term strategy. Instead, the company appears to be trying things for a few months and if that doesn't work out, it's on to the next idea. I understand that companies need to be nimble, but the magnitude of the changes that occur at Upwork are unlike any other company I have worked for - entire teams, books, strategies get turned on their head or scrapped altogether. Each time there is a shift or change, employee morale gets affected, books change midway through the month, and people spend a few days in limbo without knowing what is going to happen the next week. For reps, how well you do almost always depends on what book of business you are given - some of the hardest working reps perform poorly because they get unlucky with certain accounts, and some reps hit their numbers without even trying, because their accounts start organically performing well. There is not always an ROI for effort someone puts in. There were layoffs last November (where they laid off some top performers and kept employees who had been at the company for less than a month) and the company has been bleeding employees since then. They have lost some of their best performing reps, and managers are quitting as well. From a client's perspective, they have multiple new AEs or AMs working with them through the course of a year, which makes it challenging to establish any semblance of continuity when attempting to build client relationships. All in all, it's slightly misrepresented to potential employees. A lot of the 4 and 5 star reviews on Glassdoor have been left by freelancers who don't work for Upwork corporate full time. Filter out those to get a more accurate sense of what it is like to work at Upwork. There is true market potential, so I hope the company gets it right eventually.

We're disheartened to hear that many elements of your time here at Upwork were disappointing, to say the least. As a company that values feedback, we appreciate you sharing this experience. - Katherine

Growth within the company driven primarily by loyalty (vs merit)

Pros

Upwork's mission (To create economic opportunities so people have better lives) was great if it followed properly! The work environment was nice before.

Cons

Middle-tier management layer in Chicago needs a complete revamp. Top people are leaving the company due to stifling/suffocating work environment. The mid-level managers in Sales and Finance are looking for yes persons. They are hiring and promoting people not based on merit but on loyalty. Healthy disagreements and logical discussions are shut down and counted against you.
