Pros

- Not "too bad" salary for recent graduates in Barcelona - Good if you have not much on your CV

Cons

- Crazy stress to the point where you WILL see people crying at their desks. I decided to leave as I couldn't listen to people moan anymore about how depressed they were & I had had enough. - Training is non existent. - Long, long hours that are not compensated for (12 hour days). They tell you they will give you the hours back but have rules like 1 in a team off at once and you only deserve a day off if you are reaching goals that very few reach. - Management are useless, intimidating and run the department through fear with a discipline system in place called CAFs. If you make a mistake on a project you will have to explain what went wrong and be bullied into accepting responsibility even if the project was bad due to very low budget and only being able to pay rubbish linguists. - Do not value staff at all. - HR is frightened of management and do not do the job they are supposed to. The Barcelona office ran illegally without a union for over a year until it was forced to have one. It now consists of several senior people and the mailing list goes directly to the director. To summarize, only work here if you have nothing else & need experience - but keep looking, you can do better, I'm sure!

Pros

This is your chance to experience first hand a company which has been built on lies, broken promises and manipulation

Cons

The working hours are long, the pay is low and the pressure is high. Nothing wrong with that, of course, I have held demanding jobs before. But the undertone here is permanent abuse: people get played against each other, managers abuse their reports by lying, bullying and displaying two-faced behavior. You are encouraged to find fault with translators so you can cut their payments. You are told to charge clients for work which was never done. There is a permanent exodus of workers, making the pressure on those who are left behind even bigger. Morale is low. No chance of promotion, no pay raises. Work hard, play hard (the company's motto) in practice comes down to working 12-hour days as a standard, and then drinking yourself completely stupid. Taking into account the unpaid overtime, your hourly wages will be lower than a janitor's.

Pros

The company will have no problem in identifying me. I worked at TransPerfect Translations for 2.5 years. The following is my honest, unbiased opinion with no personal agenda- I had two positions here. Vendor manager and project coordinator. Vendor manager was good - i learned quite a bit, had a good team. I made some great connections with freelancers around the world, many of whom I am still in contact with. It was a bit monotonous, but overall, happy enough. Project manager was completely different, of which I will talk about below. 1. If you want a corporate career, this is a good way to get some experience 2. Multicultural, highly educated workforce - great for networking

Cons

1. TransPerfect systematically targets fresh or recent graduates who are eager to please and usually naive and gullible. This allows them to pay low salaries and push their new recruits beyond their limits. It was not uncommon to see female employees crying at their desks at 9pm or 10pm (once a week or every two weeks) 2. There are simply never enough project managers. This means that those that are there are given an unfeasibly high workload. Stress levels are nearly always high. 3. Management don't listen to employees. They are out of touch with what is happening on the ground and undoubtedly justify low morale / stressed employees with some excuse or other, blaming anyone and everyone but themselves 4. The Life Sciences department (40% of the Barcelona office) was changed into a military-like structure, with two newly appointed managers who micro-manage your every move and are constantly pushing you with new projects. It's akin to the old-style prison courtyard, where a watch tower was at its centre. There was usually no watchman in the tower. The tower was there to remind the prisoners that they were constantly being watched. That's what life science felt like ,with the 2 sentinels watching your every move. They themselves have pressure to perform. It all essentially comes down to the fact that there is way too much work.
