Pros

Good benefits: health, dental, vision, life; retirement plan, earned annual and sick leave. Optional Union membership.

Cons

They mostly hire at entry-level people at part-time, yet expect you to be available for overtime on demand as needed, so getting a second job really isn't an option. This makes it impossible for a single person with bills to make ends meet. I was lied to during my interview, told that most people hired at part-time status nowdays are immediately offered full-time status on their first day, due to the high turnover and lack of adequate staffing. It was due to this lie that I chose to accept the job, gambling that I would be given full-time status immediately. Well surprise surprise, that didn't happen and I stayed part time. This agency isn't part of the GS system either, so no COLA. TSOs make so very little money that you can't really afford to contribute any significant money to your retirement plan... so what's the point of having it then? The work atmosphere is very toxic. The only reason majority of TSOs stay in this job is due to the benefits. Many managers are ex-military and treat you like it. They will be overly strict and nit-picky over the tiniest things that are completely unrelated to national security. You will never get a compliment for doing a good job, but if you do the smallest thing wrong, they will chew you up for it. TSOs walk around on eggshells, worrying that if they make the tiniest mistake, they will get in trouble or fired. Managers have no compassion for the people who work under them, and the life-issues that will undoubtedly come up. They truly do not care how much they damage you inside. Managers will talk down to you very rudely with zero respect. Passengers will berate you and call you bad hurtful names. I have gone home in tears after work more times than I can count. I wish I could go back in time and stop myself from accepting this horrible job that I am now stuck in until something better comes up.

Pros

It’s better than unemployment but honestly that’s about it.

Cons

Everything. Never in my life have I ever been so disrespected and degraded by a job. The higher ups are extremely rude, the way they treat their officers is wrong on many levels. Their goal is to get you fired and they will do everything they can to try and reprimand you. For example, someone went home sick, and they wrote them up for “not appearing to be sick.” Not sure if that is even legal.

Pros

Health insurance, training, uniforms provided, some good coworkers.

Cons

Disorganized agency. They don’t pay you, they make you incur expenses and Do Not reimburse you. If you’re a female all they want you to do is pat down passengers ALL day don’t expect a fair rotation when there’s just 2 females on the floor. You don’t even get chances to be on the X-ray at ALL!! Overtime is FORCED! You are forced to work up to 14 hours daily. Management and Supervisors belittle you and everything you do is never enough. You ALWAYS get sent out to different terminals even though you selected on your bid to remain at a certain terminal. The people you will be working with are there to make your life miserable. Especially the females. It’s like high school all over again. There is no help whatsoever with documentation and getting help with issues, you always get the run around from Management. They lose paperwork, they input wrong dates, they love to give you a hard time and take no responsibility for their actions. Good luck in getting anything fixed, corrected or paid. Schedules are bad. Break rooms for officers, especially for Delta terminal are small and there is no space or enough lockers for all officers. You run the chance of something being stolen while you’re on the floor. Policies change every minute. One day you will be told to do things one way and the next day you will be screamed at and be told to screen people differently. Their system is so inconsistent and inefficient. Females I warn you. You will see your male coworkers sitting all day and YOU will be forced to stand all day. And forget about breaks, forget about eating. You don’t eat until it’s 6 hours past lunch time, they don’t care about you. If you’re a female they close the whole lane in order for you to go to the bathroom and that’s IF they let you go.
