Constant Fear and musical chairs leadership

Pros

Most of the actual work is pretty good. The perks can be amazing with all the various discounts and the extended health mental health dollars is second to none.

Cons

Every few months, the executive level goes through a round of musical chairs, especially on the health and payment systems side. This causes absolute utter chaos. You get half way through the previous reorg priorities before you have to drop all your work and get to work on the new reorg priorities. And for some reason, let's layoff 100 people even though we'll just need to hire them or replacement back over the next 6 months to a year. It's absolutely ludicrous. They rule through fear, despite wanting to increase employee engagement. It's total utter hyprocrisy.

Pros

Great people, friendly culture, creative and open minded colleagues. Easy to be a 'big fish in a small pond' if you have some technical background as the place is overrun with PMs and MBA types.

Cons

Too many talking head project manager types who don't actually do anything except for have meetings. Lots of 'talkers' and not as many 'doers' . General lack of technical talent except in some small pockets scattered throughout the company. Not non-existent but not ubiquitous like you might find in a 'real' tech company. Compensation is on the lower end, but not extremely below market either.

Pros

I had some excellent, hard working co-workers who make great things happen in spite of the seemingly insurmountable challenges discussed below. Although I was proud to volunteer in the community as a Telus employee, I don't feel their often touted commitment to volunteering makes up for the leadership style and culture I experienced. Organizations should fully live their values internally as well as externally.

Cons

In my experience, at a Director and Senior-leader level there was bullying of direct reports, a command and control/“do what I say” culture and approach (regardless of experience or expertise), gender bias, sexism, absentee leaders who manage up (and rarely - if at all - support their peers or direct reports, don't think they need feedback, lie as needed and are enabled by leaders above them), and lack of meaningful discussion or tolerance for varying perspectives and spirited debate – partly due to fear of repercussions. Functions that should support ALL employees (such as HR and similar) are antiquated, broken, biased, influenced and not trustworthy!
