Used to be a great company

Pros

World-class brands, great people who are caring and smart, and clear roles and responsibilities. Also, solid benefits and profit sharing, although those have been declining. Good direction to focus more on digital media vs traditional media.

Cons

This is not the same company I started with 10 years ago. The new COO is from Pepsi and it's all about the bottom line and profits. in 2014 the company laid off around 20% of their "white collar" work-force, really taking an ax to a situation that required a scalpel. The culture was smashed. The strategy seems scattered and the tenured employees are not valued. This is no longer "the family company." It's becoming a big, east coast style CPG organization where people are a number.

Thanks for writing. We’re glad you feel that you worked with great, smart, caring people. That’s really important to SCJ and its culture. And, we really agree about the importance of both people and innovation.

Pros

Relatively good pay and nice fringe benefits including a large fitness center and park, company resort, store, summer hours, and holiday shutdown.

Cons

"Transformation". That is the word they used to describe their efforts to "improve sustainability". What that really meant was new leadership with the stomach to make deep cuts and outsource everything possible to save a buck instead of maintaining quality services. The work from those removed or leaving on their own trickles downhill to those that remain. Work/life balance is out the window along with morale. Don't be surprised when the people doing the cutting update their resumes saying they saved the company $(insert number here) then move on to another company to do the same thing. If you want to enjoy the fringe benefits for a while and pad your resume then knock yourself out, but beware of what you are walking into.
