Pros

The local managment is dedicated, well-meaning, and fairley competant. They will do what they can to help new FSA's.

Cons

There is very little chance a new employee will make a career of Prudential. Less than 12% of the new agents that start today will be in the industry 4 years from now..that is a 88% FAILURE rate. If you are a recent graduate, have a young family, or are dependent on your income to survive, you will not make it at Prudential. If you are retired looking for a second career, or have a spouse that can support you for several years, you may have a chance. Despite the pretty marketing and the talk of "financial services" and "financial planning", new agents are hired to sell life insurance, and lot's of it. If you don't have a readily avialable base of prospects that will but expensive permenant insurance, you will have a difficult time. The poeple are good, but the system is broken. How can a company or an industry look at a 88% failure rate of new employee's and be ok with it? Doesn't it indicate thatthere is something fundementally wrong with the system? The changing regulatory enviroment is going to make it even tougher to sell products..do your self a favor and find a fee- only fiduciary acepting financial planning firm to work with and learn the career the right way. In the several years I was with Prudential, I saw many people leave after 1-2 years, demoralized, deafeten, and financially ruined because they belived the corporate hype.

Pros

Great name recognition, Benefits, Possiblity to make great salary

Cons

Management staff is condescending and incompetent. Compliance staff would like to sabotage any business that sales staff brings in. It is VERY difficult to make it in this position. Plan to have no family life outside of Prudential for the first 4 years because the only way to make it is to work 70 hours per week and spend a lot of time doing free, unpaid service work for existing Pru clients hoping to get a sale from it. No warm leads are ever provided so, it is sink or swim. You have to call everyone you know to start your practice. Even though you a making a pittance of a wage via commissions, you have to pay for office rental, technology costs, etc. as if you were in business for yourself. Realize that after a few month, you will go many weeks at a time with absolutely no paycheck after putting in 70 hours per week. It is tough.

Pros

Flexible schedule, uncapped earning potential, great products.. and a lot of intercompay support. (i.e., experts in annuities, life insurance, or benefits packages that can analyze cases and help you make recommendations).

Cons

When they recruited me they showed me a brochure that said my "potential first year compensation" was $69,000. Ha! Let me tell you.. no matter how good you are, NO ONE makes that much in their first year. Most of the agents I've talked to made between 30 and 40 their first year. Plenty of the older agents make bank, but you have to be prepared to struggle for a while. Make sure that you have enough saved up (or a spouse) to help you keep afloat when you begin. Also, you have to have a natural market. You'll be asked to come up with a list of 200 people you know who you could potentially sell to, and believe me, they will make you call EVERY SINGLE ONE of those people. It was embarrassing for me. The good news is that as you gain experience, you start to realize that you really can help these people-- Prudential's products are first class-- and you stop feeling like a pushy, aggressive, salesperson.
