Pros

Before they were laid off, I worked with some amazing people.

Cons

Very outdated mentality, where things aren't done for efficiency or benefit, just to say they were done. Lots of people just coasting in their careers, who have given up. They know their positions are secure, so they really don't need to expend any effort. Newcomers and hungry young workers are dismissed—innovation efforts in this direction rarely go anywhere due to bureaucracy and a judgmental, suffocatingly corporate attitude from the old guard. Further, they don't see productive uses for people or potential—they are not invested in professional development or growth, and moving up is impossible, even after 5 years of loyalty. Forget advancing or ever having your ideas taken seriously unless you're in their clique. I eventually lost my mojo and moved onto better things. ...Oh, by the way, their salaries are awful. I never got a raise in years of being with them on the Editorial side, when my friends were working at Salesforce and seeing the fruits of their labor much sooner. It was a waste of time.

Pros

My immediate team was great, and we were working on some very forward-thinking work.

Cons

Upper management has completely destroyed the company, and the employee morale. There is no direction, no conviction to follow-through on anything, and everyone knows it.

Poor Management and No Opportunities

Pros

Pearson offers phenomenal benefits. Their offices are nice and, usually stocked with nice-to-have amenities like vending machines, decent-sized offices and cubicles. Some good people to work with.

Cons

Budget cuts over the last ten years have made life difficult within the office. Little-to-no money is set aside for equipment upgrades. Annual raises are usually only one or two percent, even with excellent merit scores. Upper management often dictates only one person per team per year can get the coveted three percent raise; employees are left feeling like they didn't get a fair shake. A once-promising bonus (AIP) system hasn't paid out in the last few years. Employee wages aren't competitive and are no longer keeping up with the cost of living. Re-orgs every year mean you report to a new manager around review time.
