Pros

Getting paid to stand around and do nothing on site because there’s so many engineers on one job

Cons

Management literally non existent until they want to discipline you Felt like I didn’t have a real job I was just there to make up numbers and no one even needed my services I was just there because I had to be. No support from superiors. Sinking ship see you in 5 years with a different energy company. Management all ex British Gas which lack respect or empathy for staff they manage.

Pros

Generally a lot of nice people amongst employees. The company pretends to care about employees, and occasionally follows through by offering low-level perks. Overall positive energy on the surface.

Cons

Total overhype, rose-tinting, and gaslighting. Masters at tooting their own horn. Very cult-like in the wider sense and everyone outwardly pretends everything’s amazing, but in private conversations it’s clear that everyone actually thinks it’s just an extremely disorganised company, with management who simply does not care about real results. Customer-friendly, sure, (this saves them) but the only employees who genuinely enjoy working here are the people who don’t care about having sound organisational processes and are OK with BS-ing their way through problems. I don’t know how they’re doing it, but definitely a lot of data-forgery going on to make the problems seem like less than what they are. Some back-end teams do great work, but this is not the majority and absolutely everything is Kraken-Tech dependent. Octopus Energy is basically just a customer service centre for Kraken Tech, and the data-driven sides of the business can barely move a finger without Kraken Tech’s input. In terms of salary - forget having any sort of increase from your starting base. I’ve had two role advancements with practically zero salary increase and a very sad bonus contribution. Minted but cheap company, they’d rather throw compensation at customers for shortfalls than actually sort out their processes and pay their employees properly.

Octopus Energy Response

Hey there, I'm really sorry to hear your experience hasn't been a positive one at Octopus. It feels like you have a mixture of specific issues with your role, development and salary, and also a general negative view of Octopus overall. I know this isn't reflective of how many of our team feel, but I acknowledge the strength of your feelings. On your role, development and salary, I'd encourage you to reach out to your manager or another leader at Octopus to talk through how you are feeling about this, as I'm sure they would like to help. I'm also personally happy to help - feel free to email or slack me if you'd like an informal or in confidence chat. On some of the broader issues with Octopus: - We do have a strong culture which tends towards the positive and enthusiastic - but can see that doesn't resonate well with you. - We are deliberately an agile company with few formal processes - we think that drives better outcomes for customers and the business overall but again I recognise that for some people used to more formal process, it can feel strange. - On "data forgery" - this is not something I have observed. Personally I have access to a lot of the management information and it is robust and presents a full picture of what we do well and what isn't so good. Only through that openness can we improve. I would call it out if I thought we weren't sharing data accurately and I'd be interested in examples of where you think people aren't using data robustly. Hope that is a useful response and I'm happy to speak more in person and in confidence if you would like. Joe Richardson Ops Director, Octopus Energy

Pros

They treat customers very well. Opportunities are there due to fast growing nature of the company, but have to be a yes man/woman. Approve of how well things work and the way they want to help in lowering energy usage.

Cons

Expectation to go above and beyond for customers and that we could not let anybody down despite already taking on huge amounts of work leading to feeling like nobody cares. Working really hard and not getting noticed or feeling appreciated. Often being given more work as a reward.
