Pros

Met some great people in my training group (as well as graduates other streams) Most of the trainers I encountered seemed like nice people.

Cons

Half of my training group didn't get placed. Poor contract that ties you into a two year contract with FDM You don't get paid until you start your placement (Can be hard to finance the training yourself) Account managers don't seem to care about you, often not replying to phone calls or emails.

Thank you for your feedback. We are as transparent as possible in regards to the two-year contract, and appreciate that the programme may not suit everyone. Most of our consultants are placed straight away or even before their training is completed, so they have a placement waiting for them. However, sometimes there is a period of time before or in between placements. You will hopefully understand that this is a function of the market and beyond the control of FDM. During any such time we encourage consultants to take advantage of the further training and coaching that is available – including classroom based training and Pluralsight. We are always looking for ways to improve and welcome all feedback. If you are willing to meet with me to discuss your feedback further, I would welcome the opportunity. Pros

I didn't stay on the scheme for more than two days of the programme see below for why...

Cons

When I applied to FDM I was already employed and had been for close to two years when I handed my notice in so that I could join the trainee BA pathway. I was excited to start and saw it as a great opportunity to make a transition in to the project world and undoubtedly receive some brilliant training. HOWEVER. Throughout the interview process/assessment day I highlighted multiple times my preference is to work in London. Whilst I have to take part of the blame here for not truly being 'GeoFlexible' I was led to believe you would be able to achieve your preference in location most of the time. THIS IS NOT THE CASE. For the BA pathway which I chose to do the stats are in fact heavily against being placed in London. Please be careful anyone considering to move out of employment to join this scheme. You have NO say in where you will be placed at all. What you get is what you get and the sales/recruitment/open day/assessment day certainly didn't make that clear. If anything giving the opposite message. A third of BA's get placed in London so if you wish to stay in London this is a big risk. Please bare this in mind. They do make it clear on day 1 & 2 of the academy training but at this point I had already left my previous role and am now unemployed because of a the fabricated pitch I got from everyone in the lead up to my first day. To make the pill even harder to swallow was the reaction I received. Very unconcerned and reacted in a manner that suggested this is a common occurrence for people to pull out when the reality of the location placement message is hammered home. All well and good for people fresh out of Uni but when you have caused someone to leave perm employment to join your company and this is under false pretenses it would have been nice to have at least some concern or an apology. I know people personally who this scheme has worked out well for and I am sure in some cases its brilliant but please all be aware of this before committing anything.

I’m sorry to hear that you did not enjoy your time with FDM. Being geographically flexible is part of the agreement and we appreciate it doesn’t suit everyone, which is why there is a ‘cooling off’ period where anyone can drop out in the first two weeks. We do try to accommodate preferences where possible and, we like to encourage our consultants to join the clients as a permanent employee after the two year bond with FDM. So placing people somewhere which is not their preferred geographic location is not something FDM likes to do. That said, placement locations vary depending on client demand and therefore geographical flexibility is a requirement (which we reiterate throughout the recruitment process). I’m sorry that it didn’t work out for you and I would welcome the opportunity to discuss your feedback further especially as I have personally attended assessment days and delivered maybe 100 direct ‘chats’ to classes of new joiners during which geoflex is almost always discussed. You’re clear in your feedback that you do not think this message was delivered clearly to you – and I have no reason to doubt you. But I would be keen to understand directly your thoughts on how we could make this message clearer AND how we can accommodate more effectively those who are moving jobs to join FDM. If you do have time to talk, I would be delighted to do so. Please email Jonathan.Young@fdmgroup.com

Good training, bad execution

Pros

The health insurance is great and there is a slight chance (minuscule) that you will be placed in a company that you actually enjoy working at in a good location. Training is paid and most of the trainers want you to succeed and are very helpful. The company culture is very relaxed even though there is a strict dress code. FDM throws fun boat parties every year and you get to meet the CEO from London. If you are flexible in relocation, you have a better chance to getting a position that you want. Otherwise if you want to stay in NYC...good luck.

Cons

Beware! When you start with FDM, you are forced to sign a 2-year contract with them that pays you WAYYY under the market value for your skills. This then affects your salary negotiations with future employers who don't want to "overpay" you. You are also bounded by a $30,000 penalty fee for the mediocre 4 month training you receive if you break your contract. Account managers are usually very cold and calculative. They see you as a way to make commission and don't care whether you're enjoying your placement or whether it's even in your field. If you are in the Development Stream, you might end up doing IT help desk support! It doesn't matter that it's not part of your career goals, FDM and the Account Managers get paid regardless. By that time, it will be too late because if you break the contract, you have a $30,000 'training fee' penalty!
