Pros

I loved working for ascension. I worked in many units. Pay is good and they give good bonus. Its nice to be able to help sick people.

Cons

The problem here is that the unit I last worked in was all about people being mean to others, cursing at eachother, and just terrible environment. Alot of favortism there which then when you go to the manager they try to dismiss you and tell you that they flat out dont care. I put in many years into that place the company is GREAT but the people are just EVIL. I have seen nurses talk so terribly to patients. I have watched a nurse purposely start an IV with the largest needle because the patient was not listening. The nurses would threaten the patients at times. I am happy to see some of our staff leave because they were just terrible but then we are left with the rest and the managers dont care. Our manager will sit in his office while we are dying for help. He has hired all his family members and friends to work here and gives them any shift/position that they want. Just terrible. So honestly Ascension is the best hospital but the staff is shocking.

Pros

Coworkers and providers who care

Cons

Your work should be an expression of your passion. Many of us are in healthcare because we care about people and want to make a difference. Working for Ascension has many trying to provide care and compassion while the hospital giant ties your hands behind your back. Numerous aspects of the "ministry" are outsourced to places like India and the Philippines. Equipment and computer software consistently problematic with no resolution. Emails to HR and risk management unanswered. Minimal pay. Skeleton crews for face to face care while numerous at home employees chime in on the care of patients they don't know. Campaigns on improving customer service blaming employees for not smiling or introducing themselves while the complaints from patients are the phone system that doesn't work, referrals that take too long to process from the at home team and having to contact 3 or 4 separate "silos" of the process to accomplish one task. Leadership that cant/won't help change processes for the benefit of patients. Poor, poor training and hiring cheap, warm bodies instead of qualified candidates. Providers in offices with no coverage for patients when they are on vacation. High turnover. Systems that don't communicate so that labs and imaging orders are consistently missed. So sad to see how things really operate knowing you can't be a part of a positive change.
