Pros

The pay is the second highest in the area, and St. John Health System is one of the only hospitals that are still actively hiring in comparison to other local hospitals. When an emergency arises with a patient you can usually rely on assistance from your co-workers.

Cons

Management is rarely there, and even when they aren't taking time off they are almost never on the unit - so there is little to no support when questions or problems arise. The new RN residency program is badly put together and ineffective. Each floor/unit generally only looks out for itself, there is no teamwork or sense of unity within the hospital (and this is a smaller institution). Within my unit itself, there is a clique-like atmosphere in which newer employees are not made to feel welcome, with the exception of a few co-workers of course. Employees will conveniently "forget" to carry their spectralink phones (always the same people) or refuse to answer them. Various employees are constantly texting or making personal calls and ignoring call lights. Many RN's will reschedule tasks that they don't want to do on their shift and stick the next shift with them (and the night shift has less RN's, more pts, and more admits/discharges) and then proceed to sit at the nursing station gossiping with friends after they've given report, while waiting for the appropriate time to punch out.

Pros

It is a stable place. It is growing. Finances are in order and strong. People seem to be treated fairly and are recognized for good work and bad work. Medical staff seems to have a good work life balance. Good reputation in the community. Good pay and benefits for the area - fair. HR considers your experience and education.

Cons

Very poor in technology, although they are implementing an EHR system. Many of the people here have challenges using the simplest of applications - such as Excel. It is ridiculous that this place is so behind the times in physician engagement. Physicians are not made aware of their performance through any but the most rudimentary means. As with many parts of the community, this place is behind the times and not dynamic. If you are a person that prefers a stable environment that is not progressive but is steady, then you will like it here. Again, like the rest of the community, this place is not an innovator by any means and so if you are someone who does not want a challenge and just wants an undynamic atmoshpere, this seems to be the place.

Pros

Wonderful people that are mission oriented and patient-care centered. Aggressive in pursuing new technologies for patient care and a happy medical staff.

Cons

Difficult to move up in organization. Little growth potential and very little professional development. Do not feel as if one is moving forward in their career, but rather stagnant.
