Contacted through an external recruiter. They were looking to fill a position for Front End Developer. After a quick personal interview with the recruiter, I was asked to do a standard test. Up to this point, I found the position quite interesting. But my motivation vanished when I saw the test setup: I was shown a small meeting room with an old (really old, an IBM for god's sake) laptop. The "test" actually consisted on several Office files with questions. There was an Excel file with 600+ rows to fill with "yes/no" answers to rote PHP type casting and default values. Word files were I had to input formatted C++ code. Anyone who has ever worked with a word processor knows it's no tool for writing code. After an hour of fighting against Word and the crappy laptop (they didn't even offer me a mouse) I gave up. Called the recruiter and told her I had to go.
A week later, they called and unsurprisingly announced they wouldn't consider me for the position. Not that I had any interest. There wasn't a single question concerning actual software engineering, best practices, patterns, design... just dumb memorisation of language details you could google in under a minute if you ever had the need. I don't think I would be comfortable working with the kind of people who can ace those tests and only those tests.
