I applied online. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Rakuten in Jan 2018
Interview
HR Screening phone call, call with the hiring manager, 2 hour video/in person interview where you spoke with 4 different people and were given an assignment prior to and had to present, final call with VP. After making it to the third of the four rounds, I had a 2 hour video call with members of the team from various offers, ending in me presenting my assignment. Everything seemed great until I was informed two days later that the team felt I was a better fit for a more senior position... Unfortunately I had not applied to a senior position and wish they could have told me that prior to wasting 6+ hours and multiple weeks of my time during the interview process to schedule these calls and interviews along with completing the assignment. At the end of the day felt that it was very unprofessional in the final product.

I applied online. The process took 4 weeks. I interviewed at Rakuten (San Francisco, CA) in Jan 2015
Interview
Had an initial phone interview, it went well so they asked me to come in for an interview. I met two team members and they asked me back two more times. After I met everyone on the team, they requested five professional references and insisted they fill out a labor intensive survey. Seeing as I didn't want to tell my current job that I was looking for another job opportunity, it took some effort to get five professional references. After a few days, and getting all my contacts to fill out the survey they just emailed and said, sorry but no. I just felt it was a total waste of time and I'm still a little perplexed about the requirements for references. All in all, I'm happy it didn't work out.
I applied through an employee referral. The process took 3 weeks. I interviewed at Rakuten
Interview
The process was fairly smooth, but a little unorganized, and for the most part fast moving. I was referred by a current employee and started with an initial screen with the recruiter. Next, was several rounds of phone interviews with many different people in the organization. Finally, it ended with an in person interview. As the process moved along, there started to be a few signs were I felt my time wasn't appreciated and I had to consistently work around other's schedules putting my current position in jeopardy for very last minute changes. In the end, I was told they have to put hiring on hold until the Fall. I've contacted the recruiter by phone and email multiple times for clarification and follow-up to get a better understanding and have not heard back. It left me feeling unappreciated that they can't follow up to my questions since I was excited about the role and I put a lot of time forward into the process.
