Pros

Job satisfaction from knowing one is doing one's part for national security and defense. The pay is good enough and payments are highly reliable. There is job stability no matter where you are assigned. There are frequent opportunities for travel around the country and around the world which I thought was mostly positive. However, as children grew and voice their desire to stay put in school systems, it became somewhat less of a positive. Lastly, there is also the good feeling of belonging to a worldwide brotherhood/sisterhood and USO at every major airport and American Legion Posts almost everywhere one finds oneself in this world.

Cons

The institutions of our military are rigid, perhaps out of necessity. There are many unspoken rules that a newbie simply won't know how to take advantage of/stay a healthy distance away from. The rules and regulations are available for a person to learn but how is a person suppose to know what rules and regulations apply? During times of war, I have had frequent opportunities for deployment into hostile areas. I enjoyed supporting the institution and my uniformed brothers/sisters in the defense departments but sorely missed my kids. This Bush administration has just about exhausted our people and used up all of our treasures. Seeing young men maimed and killed for no long term national gains was a definite downer. This is why I retired.

Pros

Professionals, comaraderie, INTEGRITY of almost all members. The military stands out in inegrity and unselfishness when it comes to accomplishing the mission. Not motivated by money, but rather for thinking ahead, and anticipating problems.

Cons

Lack of control of where and when you will go. Excessively long work hours. Difficulty on familiy life due to this inability to predict when/where you will HAVE to move. You are forced to move whether you want to or no. You have to "kiss up" and "play the game" if you want to advance. You are measured on your ability to ALWAYS have your "game face" on no matter what. Even the lightest questining of why something needs to be done a certain way results in being labeled as "not one of the boys." Those who make it to the top have the same, glassy-eyed, fake grin, unemotionless, blank, cut competent look -- whether they are right or wrong, no matter what is happening around them.

Pros

Serving in the Air Force is a great way to serve our country and learn valuable skills which can also be applied in the civilian workforce. Promotion opportunities are quite good at least for officers due to so many people retiring and separating. Getting to work as a team with the AF core values was a great experience as well. The benefits, including medical, dental, vision, leave, taxes, and commissary are all quite valuable when compared to the "outside" world. Another great reason to work for the US Air Force is to be on the cutting edge of emerging technology.

Cons

Being an Air Force officer, I can not count on my duty day being 9-5. The hours are very long in most cases (though rewarding as well) at a cost to family life. Also, education and leadership opportunities are not always given to the deserving personnel, but to those who are closest to the decision-makers (i.e. closer to the flag pole). The medical care is not always the best, but it is "free." Senior leaders do not always consider the entire Air Force mission and focus too heavily on fighter aircraft which are significant, but possibly not as important as other emerging capabilities.
