Pros

High profile, work for the greater good of the people. The public benefits from hard work and research done at the company.

Cons

No room for real growth. Most employees are stagnant and technical training is not a priority. Company does not keep up with current technology trends and expects employees to work in a "Production Line" mode, even though the work does not lend itself to that type of operation (Senior MGT does not understand (or maybe they do and just dont care?) this because they have never done the work themselves). Company has become too political in recent years and this makes it difficult or impossible to speak your mind (it is discouraged by intimidation). Many managers only seem to care about themselves and not their direct reports.

Pros

Many great things about the company. Company mission is clear and a culture is being established by senior manager/leadership to be the Fastest, Highest Quality, Most Customer Friendly Test Laboratory in the world. Very orgainized Marketing Campaign set forward to establish the name of UL as the leader in product safety, (TV Commercials, Sponsered events, Child Videos, Safety Smart). Excellent Work life balance, (flexible work schedules, work from home, core hours,). Excellent benifit package, (401K matching structure, vacation accural policy, free safety shoes, free eyeglasses, company ball game outings, employee appreciation day, fitness center on campus, as well as vollyball, basketball, baseball fields, etc.). Improved Technology, (everyone gets a new laptop computer every 3 years). Excellent test facilities, excellent tools. In previous years had a bad name for poorly paying employees, but conserted efforts undertaken by management in recent years to correct this issue.

Cons

The morale of the staff has not been very high the last 5 years. After many drastic process changes during the 1st half of the decade the later half has seen almost as many, though not as drastic. Certain misguided efforts has given the competion foder to market againts UL. The work enviornment is very tense in some areas but very loose/laid back in other areas of the company. Many bright and talented individuals but a lot of tolerance for under/poor performers, though this has been examined in recent years. Opportunities for under/poor performers to "hide" behind the system(s). Many rules, regulations, standard operating procedures that are constantly changing. Very Bureucratic. Very slow at times. Very much so process ladien. Many hands involved in process, which can inhibit quick decisions and actions. Some inconsistancies in engineeirng judgements. Selection process on individuals who get promoted is questioned in many areas throughout the company. Great and bright performers sometimes not identified immediately. Poor reputation for having bad managers.

Pros

I appreciate that the reason that UL exists is to promote public safety by testing and certifying products to safety-based standards. It makes coming to work a lot easier to know that you are working for a place that serves a positive role in the community. In addition, UL has been proactive about being fiscally responsible in the current, chaotic economic state in the U.S., which has prevented anyone from being let go thus far.

Cons

The organization is very slow to change, and because it is not a publicly-owned company and not responsible to shareholders, staff laziness and non-productivity are sometimes tolerated beyond what I personally consider to be acceptable.
