All the layers of Management are not aligned on a vision for the company

Public Safety Mission Some departments and managers invest in training for their staff Most of the Managers are not micro-managers

Cons

Nobody knows where we are headed, there is constant changes in strategy Executive level Staff have company shares, this is not be shared in an open way when UL went from being a not-for profit to profit status. Lots of miscommunication between layers of management

Pros

Solid, steady job. Not working over 40 hours very often. Decent environment, good benefits. They do promote alot of their own people into entry level managerial positions.

Cons

Lack of engineering development, a career path that becomes very isolated with time, management can be very corporate, tedious and arbitrary. Limited advancement through engineering hierarchy is a strange anachronism.

It "was" a great company to work for. Great work/life balance, great benefits, great people.

Cons

Company not #1 in their league anymore. Instead of changing with the times and improved their business to be competitive, they elected to lay off the hard working great people that made the company succeed over the years. To this day current employees fear for that "tap on the shoulder" to be laid off. Such a shame.
