EMC/RF Test Engineer

Business Outlook

Pros

No micromanagement. Decent pay/benefits for the expected work. Job security in being a test engineer. OT opportunities when salary non-exempt. If you take initiative, you have the opportunity to expand your skillset across teams(e.g. RF and EMC). If you want a day off, no trouble in getting it.

Cons

No one is held accountable and continuous improvement is not enforced. Instead of finding long term solutions, the easiest solution is utilized until it becomes a problem again and then the cycle repeats itself. This puts pressure on the ones who are forced in to stepping up due to poor planning. Management only knows what they see on paper and does not make the effort to support test engineers properly or even get to know them. This is detrimental to quarterly reviews and bonus allocation since they can distribute how they see fit rather than actual performance. Underappreciated if you are a high performer. Project Handlers push their work onto test engineers.

Pros

It has an ok work/life balance with some roles allowing for hybrid workweek.

Cons

UL has slashed benefits including profit sharing, reduced annual salary bumps, raised insurance premiums, and lowered staff morale all while racking in record profits for the top execs. It used to be a great place to work but they got rid of the long time employees since they no longer value our loyalty.

Thank you for leaving us your feedback and for your length of service with UL Solutions. It is great to hear you feel that your work/life balance is respected and you are able to enjoy the benefits of our hybrid work policy. We have recently restructured our benefits package to be more in line with market offerings and to standardize our offerings. We include every employee in the annual employee incentive bonus program and will include all employees in the employee stock purchase program, with a global rollout in progress. We take your feedback seriously and appreciate you sharing this feedback.

Pros

Getting to work with a wide variety of manufacturers and product types.

Cons

Minimal training due to all of field being overworked in most area and nobody has time to give. They will continue to pile on work and tell you to figure it out without much support. Pay is nowhere adequate for the work and expectations in this role. This is a job you will be always working with little work/life balance as you are the face of the company for many customers and you could have any of them reaching out to you to put out their fires. Managing hundreds of customers and over a thousand audits and inspections a year can be stressful.
