I loved UL

Pros

One of the absolute best teams I've ever been a part of. I enjoyed going to work with them every day and I knew that team had each others' back. Great, legacy company with a storied history, clear mandate, and a bright future.

Cons

From a marketing standpoint, UL could use really focus in on who it wants to be in the new digital marketplace. A lot of the business and effort is focused on continuing the work UL has done for the last 100 years without considering where they are headed or why they invest in certain marketing functions.

Pros

Important values and excellent culture. Management is approachable. Freedom to build your internal business, heavy investment in education and training, and opportunity for growth.

Cons

Difficult to recruit talent with 15 days of vacation when many employers are offering 21+. Health plan is high-deductible (a common prescription went from $30 to $280 per month from my prior employer) so negotiate a much higher salary to prepare for that.

Thank you for highlighting what makes UL such a great place to work: amazing culture, supportive managers, and commitment to employees' professional development. When it comes to total rewards, our benefits team benchmarks yearly to ensure we're competitive, and in fact, our overall benefits package offers more affordability and flexibility than our industry peers. You'll be pleased to know that in 2020, UL is increasing vacation time for a portion of our salaried employees. Also, on top of vacation days, we offer company holidays, floating holidays, paid sick leave, 2 paid volunteer days, and other leave benefits such as paid parental bonding. All in all, UL does a tremendous job of keeping employees' overall well-being in mind. Thanks again for your feedback!

Software is struggling to find its footing

Pros

A flexible employer and a nice bunch of colleagues. Compensation wise they are pretty reasonable for the market and have some good benefits To some extent there isn’t a great pressure or urgency so it means work/ life balance is good Lots of focus on safety and freebies to boot Training is built in to the employee handbook and there UL University which is fantastic.

Cons

There’s constant change and UL Software seems to be suffering a lot with this. Too much work to do, but too unstructured and chaotic to know how to solve it. The change of President to the division is refreshing. She has the right ideas and strategy but worry the layer after isn’t able to execute the plan. Attitudes of some of staff from the acquired companies are resistant to change and hold back progress.
