Pros

I think the best reason to work for TELUS would be the way they truly believe in Give where you live. Iknow of a lot of other companies that say that they like to give back where they live but TELUS truly does that. It seems like every time I read the newspaper or everyweek there is something new that we are doing at work to benefit different organizations with the community in which we live and work. That is just a major perk and benefit of working for TELUS. Other amazing reasons to work for TELUS would be the benefits package, the rate of pay, the perks like discounts and sales compensation and recognition plan but best of all would be the people that I work with and work for.

Cons

I think the biggest downside of working for TELUS would be the lack of flexability to balance work and home life. I work a lot of overtime and when I first started I could take my overtime as holidays but that hasn't been an option for over a couple of years. It is very hard to take time off for family events if they are spur of the moment and hadn't been planned when vacation was booked at the begining of the year. The only other downside that I can think of is the difference in shifts. With a home life and a child at home it is very hard for daycare to work a late 12-8 shift or on the weekends.

Pros

Some positions are very laxed. Good if you enjoy work life balance. Pay for performance. If you work hard and smart you will be noticed. Telus is trying their best to improve engagement. But you cannot expect a lot from any TELCO. New graduates may like the new grad program, but don't get stuck in some boring areas.

Cons

No career advancement or progression is very slow. Must have lots of patience. The amount of work you do is reflective in your pay. Don't get stuck in a bad position. Do your homework before taking on any position. If you just need a job, then make sure you network a lot. People skills are important here. Technical knowledge in engineering/IT positions are VERY valued. If you have technical and people skills, you will advance in due time. Variable pay is good, but is tied too closely to overall company/market performance which is often out of your control. Benefits were not as good as before. Stock options are gone unless your an executive. Engineers are compensated well (moving up), but has been low compared to the market for the past few years. Turn over is still higher than it should be.

Pros

Middle management is a dedicated team committed to building a great place to work. With an aging workforce, opportunities are becoming increasingly plentiful. Also, TELUS is a great place to see the evolution of technology roadmaps.

Cons

An older workforce also brings an older mindset. Innovation from newer team members is sometimes stymied because of old ways of thought. A lot of roadblocks (corporate beaurocracy) in place to bringing an idea to life. Although middle management is a great team, communication up to senior levels is difficult. With a company as large as TELUS, speed to market can lack. Team members are often 'told' and not engaged in developing solutions to issues. Office facilities / work environment can also be terrible, depending on which building you work in.
