Pros

Good work-life balance with a lot of flexibility as long as you pull your weight (although new management is now trying to foster a culture of presenteeism). Some incredibly smart people around (but sadly in the middle of a mass exodus, 28 people and counting have left the technology department since the recent merger).

Cons

New technology management behaves like headless chickens, changing plans every other week and failing to set the company on a course of delivering any value whatsoever, yet senior executives lap up their excuses and promises of a better future "soon" instead of listening to the talented folks on the ground who can see that everything is on fire. Uncertainty is rife throughout the organisation, with no decisions being made and nothing but uncertain promises everywhere. Integration decisions are being made only based on input from people with no high- or low-level understanding of existing systems. Years of great work that delivered consistent results and exceeded all stakeholder expectations is being scrapped in favour of an unproven and hilariously misengineered magic new platform that is suffering constant delays and setbacks. Technology staff brought in since the merger is utterly lacking in diversity and feels like an almost Silicon Valley-esque boys club. Practically all of management comes from the "ex-Springer" side of the merger and makes no effort to hide their agenda of decommissioning everything Nature brought to the merger.

Pros

- Flexible work/life balance - Promote from within - co-workers are friendly and overall work environment is very pleasant. - The job is often "what you make of it" and there is room for creativity and input. - Professional development courses are offered (Sales/Marketing Academy), so you get trained on skills that are transferable to other companies. - Company is strong and looked to as an industry leader - Librarians love our products. - great insurance/retirement benefits

Cons

Communication: During the recent merger with Nature, management remained silent and did not acknowledge overall sense of dread/fear over changes to come. Even when there was no news, a regular (monthly? quarterly?) update from upper management just to say, "hey, there's still no news, hang in there/thanks for your patience & we understand you're anxious" would have gone a very long way. Money: Pay is extremely low compared to market rate of similar jobs at competitor companies. If you move up to a different position, Springer is EXTREMELY unwilling to give significant or acceptable pay raises. The only way to be paid what you're worth is to leave and come back, which a few people have done. Which leads me to... Turnover: Springer's not a bad place to work, but recent years have seen a very high turnover rate in the sales teams and it is affecting our reputation. A couple of people who have been put into management roles have been very aggressive/toxic to their staff, which might be one reason. Another is the reticence to give talent reasonable pay raises and promotions.

Pros

Independent work and responsibility attain sales targets. Excellent healthcare program if the platinum level is selected for pre-tax salary deductions for the family. Interesting and extensive travel required for the job with a position covering between 5 US states and 2 countries. Good company reputation with clients. Many excellent people to work with.

Cons

Compensation program for sales is not up to standards for the industry. Commissions are not part of the compensation program. Bonus' is only paid formally one time per year, 4 months after the calendar year (fiscal year) ends. Base salary was approximately $25,000 below similar companies in the industry where I have worked. Inflexible business models that are out of date within the industry. Problematic CRM tool. High rate of turnover within support staff and outside sales. Limited opportunity. No additional bonus comp for inside sales support.
