Pros

If you like working 18-36 hour days for weeks at a time, while training green hats then this is your career. Good 401K plan and stock purchase plan. Good safety training and programs.

Cons

12 hour days minimum for sometimes 3-4 weeks at a time then only getting a day or two off before doing it all over again. In some cases they automatically take your vacation days away if you are not on a work site in between these long jobs. Pay has been cut 45% from previous years, all incentive bonuses were taken away. Vehicle allowances were reduced with talks of taking them completely away. And now health benefits were stripped to basics, as long as you dont need a doctor on this plan you are ok. Other cons you can not have alcohol while on the job as I said 3-4 weeks sometimes. You also don't get to see your family most of the time while on these jobs. ( Prior to this the benefits and the compensation made up for this but that is all gone now) I have been worked up to 53 hours with no sleep.

Pros

- If you want an international career where you move around every 3-4 years. If you are single this is great, but if you are married means that spouse cannot have a career. - If you are French, this company has a french bias.

Cons

- In Schlumberger lingo if you are "home country resident" your career is basically stalled. - If in the first few years with this company if you make a few "A" ratings and are "international mobile" your career for the next 20 years will be dramatically different. - R&D functions are secondary to field. You will never make the same levels as a person from the field.

Pros

To make a lot of money right out of school. Usually left alone to do your job. Managers try to communicate with personnel as little as possible so you can do pretty much whatever you want as long as you get the job done. Type of people that usually hire on are mostly really friendly and easy to get along with. Since they work you really hard everyone has this need to party hard when they have time off. So slb parties can get pretty crazy. Also, because your life is totally out of sync with the normal world you more than likely will get into a relationship with someone you work with because they are the only ones that can understand. However, slb does very little to do anything for duel career couples.

Cons

Not working with very intelligent people. Throwing your personal life away. Constantly having to C.Y.A. Getting dirty. It seems that they actually punish you in this company for having an education. Engineers who have at least a 4 year degree make about 20 to 30% less than "speacialists" who do the exact same job and but usually have a two year degree from an online University in anything. They tell you that engineers have a higher salary than specialists but what they don't tell you is they are not only treated better when it comes to time off because they are more "family orientated" but they also get a higher job bonus which is where the money is really at.
