Pros

Schlumberger is a technical leader in the field and provides great training to employees. If you are one of the lucky ones who actually makes is out of the field, it seems like it would be a good company to work for.

Cons

It all depends on where you end up working. Some districts are very good, others are terrible. There is an enormous disconnect between the managers and the field population. Much of this is due to very poor communication from the top down within our district. Management seems to be very hasty in decision making without thinking first about the long term consequences of the decisions. An example of this would be in moving the local managers to Houston (4 hours away.) Many employees have either never met their manager in person, or only see them 1-2 times per year. Now 2 years later they are realizing that it is bad for managers to be so far from their employees, when this should have been immediately apparent. The schedule with this job can be very unpredictable to the point of almost being non existent. In order to cope with this you must be a flexible person. Depending on your family status, this can be difficult at times.

Pros

Excellent benefits, plenty of opportunities, ability to travel to other areas of the world and get paid doing it. Training is very good, some employees are afforded the opportunity to continue their education with SLB assistance (field employees not usually afforded the opportunity).

Cons

Middle management not always properly trained to lead/ teach. Employees often required to choose between family OR Schlumberger. Field locations expect field personnel to perform their jobs and support roles on a daily basis. Field personnel are often held accountable to improve local processes of operations. Very time consuming to fully invest yourself into the job as desired by management; This often leads to poor family life, skewed priorities; resentment at work and home. Expect to spend many weekends and long days away from your family as a field specialist. The work is often stressful, dangerous, performed in adverse weather conditions. Work schedule is very dynamic (meaning you may be doing one thing today, and tomorrow you could be travelling to a remote job site with as little as 24 hours notice). The lack of consideration for an employees family is very disturbing, and may cause life at home to be strained. Happily married persons BEWARE, this job path can lead to discontent and friction at home!

Pros

There are a lot of opportunities for travel if you like travelling. The bonus package is nice and if you are an American citizen you can actually get a given multiple (i forget what the formal name is) times your base salary.

Cons

You are basically married to the job and you stay at the field site for extended periods of time. You should also throw the notion of a 9 to 5 out the window. You can be called in at 2 am to make a 4hr drive.
