The biggest advantage is that they have a clear cut career path and it is implemented. There are clear tangible rewards for self-motivated driven individuals and the training opportunites are boundless.

Cons

The work is subject to the whims of the oil price and the company is quick to the trigger once a downturn is observed. The in-house competition can be fierce and failures are punished draconically.
