Pros

In no particular order: * No one ever leaves (either voluntarily or involuntarily), so it's easy to get help and mentors are plentiful. * There are some smart, hard working engineers here. * Low stress. * Work/Life balance... emphasis on life. * Good IT dept. Machines aren't locked down and they are generous with the hardware. * Gorgeous campus * Good food. * Good fringe benefits, if you can use them (e.g. onsite day care, but I don't have children). There's also a very nice health center and a cemetery, so SAS has you covered cradle to grave. :-)

Cons

In no particular order: * No one ever leaves. When decisions are made, "how we've always done it" carries significant weight. Also, you want to change jobs? That's great as soon as they have an opening, which should be around the year 2245. * There are some really terrible devs here who are Senior and Principal no less. * Low stress only if the first bullet point and the next point don't bother you. * Work/Life balance... Just because you're blocked waiting on something from someone else isn't going to prevent them from going on vacation for a week. * Salary is below the industry because of all the benefits. * Very, very slow to adopt new technology. No seriously, it's a glacial pace of tech change here.

Pros

Comfortable working environment. Decent pace. Private offices. Stocked breakroom. Good people.

Cons

1. The benefits are understood to be a part of your overall compensation. The problem is that you may not want or even be able to take advantage of many of them. If you don't have a child then subsidized child care is useless but the cost of it is still part of your compensation. Ditto gym, swimming pool,M&Ms, etc. So effectively you give up some compensation. 2. Actual salaries are low compared to other software companies, partly because of #1. 3. SAS does NOT compensate you for working hard. No matter how well I am reviewed my raises never reflect it. Last set of raises were around 1%. 4. Advancement depends on who you know, not how well you perform. I see so many do-nothings with top-level titles here. 5. None of us have any idea what is going to happen when Goodnight retires. 6. Since the company is so comfortable very few leave. So long timers reach top positions. As such new ideas are extremely hard to implement because management is entrenched, closeminded, and unaware of concepts outside the company.

Pros

If you can find your way to shuck and jive like everyone else, go for it. The bet place in the world to have a job, while you work on your other job.

Cons

Lies, #@*! lies and statistics. No leadership, just sheep. A billion dollar lifestyle business.
