Great people in the organization, limited career potential

Pros

good medical benefits, intelligent and passionate workforce. Much of the company has been there for a long period of time so there is good rapport. Some areas of excellence - strong IT department, Finance function, some R&D groups.

Cons

Limited growth potential - both for the company and employee. The company is working to reposition itself for growth rather than gradual decline, but most of the businesses were already mature when they were acquired, so without making dramatic changes, or making more aggressive acquisitions, the trajectory is unlikely to change. Like most companies, career development needs to be managed by the employee - do not expect management to contribute. It is not an expectation made of the management team and career opportunities in general are limited. Concerning within the last year is the departures and demotions of women. Only a handful of women remain in management positions (none remain on the executive team).

Great people, but who's in charge?

Pros

The best thing about working at Rocket is the quality of your peers... smart people in every position. There is a lot of opportunity to do amazing work, as long as you are self-directed and can figure it out on your own. If you can manage your own workload, and find time to do other cool stuff, there is an opportunity to create and grow. If you need direction, this might not be the place for you. Excellent enticements to join, including 100% paid health insurance, generous vacation and time off policies, and matching 401K.

Cons

Exciting place to be, when you first join. After the initial honeymoon phase, the recognition and visibility just goes POOF. No one seems to be helping employees develop a career path, and it's easy to get overlooked. Raises? Don't hold your breath. Three HR plans in three years... where are we going, Rocket? Help us out here. Rocket attracts good talent, but does not work hard enough to retain the same employees. Professional development budgets are zero or very small, and conferences and training are handed out on a "it's who you know" basis. Management changes are like a revolving door at Rocket. Culture is still being defined, rapid growth is not handled well.
