Pros

It’s a great place to build a strong foundation in the company. If you’re on the right team, you’ll learn a lot. Strong performance is rewarded, and consistent success in hitting KPIs and achieving high billing is highly praised. The company also offers fun events and activities that provide a refreshing break from work from time to time.

Cons

Your career at RW will heavily depend on who manages you. Many senior management members are either not involved in billing or contribute very little to recruitment activities. Instead, their primary focus is on constantly monitoring consultants' KPIs and activities. Some take micromanagement to an extreme—gaslighting consultants and making them feel incompetent when they fail to meet billing targets or KPIs. Sexual and power harassment are tolerated as long as individuals excel at office politics. Over the past 5 years, I have seen more than 20 consultants leave under particular senior manager while constant replacements are made, The root cause remains unaddressed. There is no clear incentive bonus structure. At times, your manager may take advantage of this, giving you a significantly lower bonus while keeping some portion for themselves.

Robert Walters Response

Thank you for taking the time to leave a review. I'm pleased to hear that you appreciated the training and hands-on recruitment experience at Robert Walters. However, I'm sorry to learn about your concerns regarding KPIs and perceived micromanagement. KPIs are an essential tool for us, providing clarity and direction for our team members. They ensure that everyone is aligned with their teams’ goals and can identify areas for their own professional development. Importantly, there is a strong correlation between meeting KPIs and achieving successful outcomes, which helps us maintain our high standards and deliver strong results. Our aim with KPIs is to empower individuals by giving them clear benchmarks to strive for, along with the support and training needed to achieve them, rather than promoting micromanagement. To further support our employees, we regularly conduct employee engagement surveys to gather feedback and implement improvements where needed. We focus on equipping our managers with the skills necessary to help their teams thrive and maintain a zero-tolerance policy for office politics or harassment. We have clear reporting channels and processes in place for any harassment claims, ensuring that concerns are addressed promptly and effectively. Our commitment is to maintain a supportive and respectful work environment. Regarding your concerns about bonuses, I want to clarify that our bonus distribution process involves several checks and multiple layers of approval, including my oversight, to ensure fairness and transparency, and it's not possible for managers to retain any portion for themselves unfairly. I would appreciate the opportunity to learn more about your experiences. Please feel free to email me at Rachna.Ratra@robertwalters.com.jp so we can arrange a confidential conversation.
