Pros

They offer free lunch every day The office is in a good location (in South Station) The benefits include a free membership to Hubway

Cons

CTO basically runs the company and leads with threats and pitting groups and people against each other. They hire smart people, but throw them in a toxic environment where they either leave quickly (~3 people per week) or stay and hate working there. Everyone is expected to work 50-60 hours and performance is based on hours, rather than quality of work. Also, the long hours are caused by poor planning by management, rather than actual amount of work. (With the CTO constantly changing schedules and priorities without discussing it with anyone, that's bound to happen.) Management (including HR) doesn't care about your career growth or advancement, they're too busy worrying about kissing up to the CTO. There were issues with sexism while I was there.

Pros

Outsiders think it is a great company since we made so many high profile acquisitions.

Cons

Two tier system. Japanese worker and management have the superior mentality that only them can make decision and direct non Japanese. Females are expected to serve tea and do all dirty work regardless of your actual job description. Management can be rude and harsh. (agree with the military style mentioned in one review). Mikitani is probably a smart person but being surrounded by too many "yes" men.

Pros

Really casual work environment Catered lunches twice a week Little supervision Decent culture Flexible work hours

Cons

No opportunities for growth Work gets repetitive fast General attitude of upper management makes me wonder about the company's future The company has been getting very stagnant ever since it's purchase. With all the other e-commerce sites out there, I can't see Rakuten.com staying in business much longer. All the back end on the IT side is horribly outdated.
