Pros

Business is growing, and should continue to do so in the near future. Good location near Embarcadero BART, nice view. Catered lunches on Wednesdays. Lots of snacks. Extra Cash Back on purchases made through Ebates.

Cons

Almost no female leadership. Exec team consists of 18 people, and only 1 of 18 is a woman. Very little is shared about strategic objectives. Updates at the weekly all hands are pretty high level and don’t give the rank and file visibility into the larger company goals and why we’re working on certain things. Similarly, financial performance is always represented as X% Year over Year, never in terms of a dollar amount and how we are tracking vs. plan. CEO is almost never around, and when he is around he only talks to his exec team. All new employees must perform in front of the company at the weekly all hands (sing a song, play the guitar, etc.). Really hard/uncomfortable for some new hires. People are frequently penalized and given reduced bonuses for factors outside their control. They don't give extra bonus $ if you over deliver (example: if your bonus target is $10k, there is no way to get more than $10k if you are a really strong performer. They will just look for reasons to deduct from the $10k). 4 years to fully vest 401k

Pros

As an engineer I was disappointed that the more interesting people in this company tend to be in the business unit. This is not a great place to learn for us. One positive thing though, Not many Japanese companies can afford to get Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford, or Oxbridge grads with good connections from abroad. So for a Japanese company, Rakuten has done well in this area (largely due to its relative fame).

Cons

Sadly all the top talent are treated in the same way OR worse than average employees. So even my Princeton douki for example is doing stupid tasks and never given the opportunity to show what she can bring from outside. This is the bad thing about Japanese culture.
