Pros

Nice overall physical campus, with library, cafeteria and large sports fields. Some very capable folks, courses available.

Cons

It depends on the department, and some are excellent. But the GNS department has serious managerial shortcomings. Managers, and there are many of them, are mostly non-technical folks. They sit in a very pleasant part of the building, with large offices, clean carpets, beautiful windows and a quiet environment, yet their engineers sit in the dungeon -- loud, dirty, cramped cubicle farm. There isn't even a decent kitchenette. Management at GNS simply does not take good care of its engineers. Since some very old engineers are kept around, well past their retirement age and past their prime, there is little room for promotion for some of their younger and mid-career employees. It's a department with almost no room for innovation. I have seen innovative ideas by some of the younger folks rudely belittled and trampled upon by crude technical leads.

Pros

* Flexible hours * Paid overtime

Cons

* Toxic, political culture that prioritizes protecting the status quo over productivity and quality * Engineers are micromanaged and have very little independence, responsibility or creative freedom. The only expectation of engineers is that they write code based on a given specification; they have minimal involvement with conceptual and design decisions. * Development is slowed by an immense amount of technical debt; no emphasis on following industry norms or best practices; * Promotions are scarce and a matter of time rather than merit * Upper management seem apathetic towards employee comfort and morale; engineers are not given adequate equipment * Overtime is expected * Real, lasting change seems impossible due to the overwhelming levels of middle-management * Working in a classified environment means lots of restrictions

Pros

Good pay, sometimes you won’t have to work weekends...

Cons

Horrible hours, have to explain why you charged each hour of your day to certain programs being ran/managed by finance majors and not engineers, no room or opportunity to be innovative and progress manufacturing processes, bandaid solutions for everything, all OPS management does is go to meetings that make them feel more important than the people pushing their product out, then they go demand everything be done after and cheaper.
