Pros

Pearson does a good job of recognizing talent and promoting from within. Having a degree in English or publishing experience prior to coming is good, but a lack thereof does not hinder growth. On the job and formal training is well organized. The people at Pearson are incredibly talented and hard working.

Cons

It is a challenge to balance work/life when working at a high-stress type of job. Pearson is no exception to this--a cyclical industry like college publishing requires travel and long hours during peak season, and what used to be the "off" season does not exist anymore. Still there are perks to make up for it, and I would highly recommend it as a great place to work.

Preservation of the Status Quo

Pros

Somewhat flexible work/life schedule, casual workplace, good benefits package.

Cons

Within the Production Department: There is a disconnect between the self-praise Upper Management gives itself (and the bonuses they receive) and low-level Employees Senior Management does not spend time visiting Employee areas to inquire about Employee lives or projects, much less level of satisfaction. No effort is made to bolster Employee morale or offer viable career paths. Employees in Production receive little to no recognition (including no special monetary bonuses for their products that do well in the marketplace, unlike their Editorial colleagues who do) for the hard work and dedication they show to producing an outstanding product. Morale is low, and employees have no incentive to work better or smarter, other than to maintain the status quo.

Pros

-Good place to learn the basics of publishing -Good training programs available, tuition reimbursement, graduate studies -Good people to work with -Good, social environment in and out of the office -Nice commutable location

Cons

-salary low -no real promotion from within - are pretty much on a level playing field with people outside the company for higher positions -editorial assistants stay as editorial assistants, unless they leave the company
