Pros

Hybrid working and nice direct colleagues.

Cons

I’d like to start the review with a warning to the fact that most of the positive reviews from people within the EV seller team are disingenuous and have been written due to the head of activation explicitly asking people to leave them to help with recruitment to water down all of the negative ones that are starting to appear. This is the general theme at OEV; don’t address or fix the actual problem which would require listening to how staff feel, just try and navigate around it using the fact that it’s a ‘start up’ as the reason and pointing to the fact that there is apparently a great culture. Around 80% of staff in the role are either looking to leave or are seriously considering it, this number rises further for staff that have been in the role for over 6 months, this is an open topic of conversation amongst the EV sales team as well as their own managers. Any OTE figure given is false and you can expect this to significantly decrease over time along with increasing stress from complaint customers and those who cancel orders. You will quickly realise that you are just a number to them despite the promises of progression that come with joining a ‘start up’ which is rapidly growing. There are a select few that have progressed but unless you were in a year or two ago then these opportunities just simply don’t exist. Any previous experience that you have or suggestions that you make may be listened to by your direct manager but as soon as they go above to the head of department (the same person that is ironically the head of culture) they will be ignored and instead they will simply turn back to the fact that we need to make more phone calls. You can see the attitude towards feedback from less senior members of staff from those more senior in the response to other reviews on here, for example the part on weekend work that was mentioned on a one star review. It is absolutely true that the team were asked to work on the weekend for food vouchers and potential extra commission but no guaranteed pay. Those who didn’t would then not have access to the leads on Monday as those who worked on the weekend would have taken them. Granted they had the choice but they felt that they had to do it because the targets at that time were impossible to hit and they didn’t want to miss out on getting paid any commission. It is worth noting that no senior managers worked on these weekends either and the head of sales often states how they aren’t paid commission - this point alone is fine and it is for them to negotiate their own renumeration, however, in a time when the main stress of the team they supposedly lead is earning little to no commission (which was sold as almost a certainty when taking the job) is completely out of touch and quite distasteful. In the interest of fairness, weekend work hasn’t happened recently, mainly due to how badly it went down initially. The main point to this paragraph is to highlight the attitude of senior members of staff. The culture that is promised is not a reality. There are pool and ping pong tables at the office, however, there is an awkwardness around using them and several members of the team have been pulled up by management for playing a single game as they haven’t made enough calls on that given day regardless of the number of sales that they have made that month or their track record. You have very little autonomy with managers who are constantly under fire from above pulling you up if your call time is low even if you have made several calls that day but had no luck with voicemails. There are some perks such as occasional takeaway food, however, you can only expect to get a dominoes for lunch when conveniently the head of culture’s children are in the office… If one person has an issue then it could be the case that the culture isn’t for them. When everyone is saying it, maybe there is something wrong with the culture or those in charge of it. The final point I’d make on the people in charge, certainly of the direct sales function, is that there is no genuine passion for the ‘mission’. The director has an ICE people carrier for scooting the family around in as there is apparently no suitable EV with 5 seats and the head of sales only recently agreed to give up their diesel car in exchange for an EV admitting they were reluctant to switch because they weren’t sure on an EV and didn’t actually know how a salary sacrifice worked… In summary, unless you want to become just another number in a call centre then I would look elsewhere.

My name is Ollie and I lead all of the growth teams here at Octopus EV. Thanks for taking the time to leave this review. I’ve mentioned in responding to another review on here, the most important part of my role is to to create an amazing culture in which people are able to thrive and enjoy working here. It sounds like this isn’t the case for yourself at the moment which is really disappointing, this is not how I want things to be. We’re a rapidly growing business which creates a really exciting space to work, it also means we definitely make mistakes along the way. I am always keen to make time to catch up and find out how things are going, I am in both the London and Weybridge offices each week. I’m always keen to hear and up for trying new ideas. On some of the specifics in your review. We have had some tough months where not everyone has hit their full target and earnt full commission, there are people who are consistently achieving this though. We’ve seen quite a few members of the team progress recently to other roles within Octopus EV. We’re really keen to support people’s development. Alongside normal, on the job support, we offer everyone £1,000 per year to use for their own development. For many, I know. they really enjoy the EV expert sales role, it sounds like this isn’t how it is going for you. I’d love to find out more, please do reach out to me, I’d love to grab a coffee together and talk more. Ollie Boots Chief Commercial Officer, Octopus EV Ps - I do have an internal combustion engine car for my family. My main car though is an EV. We are really keen everyone at Octopus EV has the ability to have their own EV and we support team members to be able to do this. Many of the EV experts drive their own EV as do all of the growth leadership team.

Pros

Being able to go to the main office and enjoying my time with the people at Octopus Energy, also they have shares. I met some really nice people here too, and the only D&I that isn't impacted negatively here is your sexuality.

Cons

I want to start this off saying that I expected nothing but the best working for a company that is a branch of THE octopus energy. But the experience at electric vehicles was not what I expected and if I cold give these guys a negative score I really would. 1. Don’t expect to be treated fairly or equally, unless you’re A. White male B. A person who sucks up to your boss and ready to be a “pick me” C. Ready to play corporate power games D. A functioning alcoholic Matter of the fact is that the culture is toxic, you’ll feel it when you enter, if you don’t, you’ll definitely see it over time. They will work you like a dog, and pay you dangerously low. To put into context I applied for other jobs after leaving, especially being new to London, and my starting salary with every other company was triple what they offered - 60k/63k and OTE. If you work here prepare to be underpaid. OEV is infact a glorified call center with the “we’re family, we have a pool table tripe” Career progression ..don’t expect it. The term HR exist to protect management is very true here also. What did I get… A manager who’s so worried about his job he instills the fear within his team members, a manager who makes multiple employees cry and micro manages the break I had between calls. Imagine being asked why I had a 2/3 minute break between 7 of my calls despite letting them know I have ADHD as if this isn’t unreasonable enough on its own. Also had a disorganized and quite frankly awful employee onboarding and training. Flaky and unachievable commission structure and overall sour place to be at the very least in my experience. I have never ever felt the need to leave a review on one of these things about a place, but if you’re serious about your career, mental health and a place that’s generally accepting of people who are different I would genuinely suggest you look elsewhere.

Pros

- Access to wide range of EVs to test drive - OK as a 1st job or to build experience

Cons

- You are just another number in a call centre focused on hitting a daily number - Targets are not achievable anymore, recruiters may tell you there are - but this is not the case anymore as the team has expanded so much but the offering and number of high quality leads has not kept u. (don't expect to earn more 25-50% of the advertised OTE) - low level of autonomy unless you are in a non client facing role - The Team is led by someone with no experience, knowledge or passion for EVs and offers little aside from trying to implement a script or set phrases into everyone's calls / asking people why they have not called unresponsive contacts 3 times in one day - Weekend working has previously been offered for people to catch up on targets, this has been unpaid (we were given a food voucher in lieu of payment), kind of sums up the culture. - Unofficial Promotions made without due process or opportunity, and then the playing field is not level as they are also given the chance for sales not offered to the average EV seller - Constantly having to deal with cancellations of orders, which could be months after taking the order - further adds to pressure and difficulty hitting targets

We’re a rapidly growing business which creates a really exciting space to work, it also means we definitely make mistakes along the way. Feedback like this is really valuable, we really encourage all feedback - we survey all team members once a week to find out how things are going and on a personal, less formal, basis I am always keen to make time to catch up and find out how things are going. In terms of some of the specifics in your review. We have had some tough months where not everyone has hit their full target and earnt full commission, there are people who are consistently achieving this though. We have a really flexible culture with unlimited holidays, flexible hours and full hybrid working to share some elements of how we work. No one has been asked to work weekends without pay, this is always fully optional. With unlimited holidays you are always able to take an additional day off if you do decide to work at a weekend. For many, I know. they really enjoy the EV expert sales role, it sounds like this isn’t how it is going for you.
