Pros

They pay very well, have many variety of flexible shifts and fields of specialty. However, if you're ever a victim of discrimination or harassment prepare yourself to hire a GREAT employment attorney.

Cons

Many department follow the policies, rules and regulations. Most of the managers follow the EEOC regulations and teat all of their employees equal.

Pros

Big hospital system, so lots of options for jobs without losing any benefits like PTO or pension (Yes, a pension! Another pro!). Since I've been with NSH for 27 years, that's important to me. Currently, I have an amazing manager. However, management differs greatly from department to department--in experience, professionalism, and management style (employee support). MANY (even most) of my co-workers are amazing nurses and true professionals, which is what makes my job a joy to come to every day.

Cons

After being an employee for 27 years, the biggest con is #1 PAY. Northside pays less than the average ATL hospital and that is really discouraging for nurses. Especially when nurses who have been loyal and stay with the company for years are working alongside travel nurses making double. NSH wouldn't need travelers if they paid the nurses! Then the units would be staffed appropriately and patient satisfaction would improve. Seems like an easy fix to me. Stop bringing in consultants to find out why nurses are leaving and ASK THE NURSES. Then offer them the pay they deserve. Once the units are staffed and the nurses feel valued they will stay. ESPECIALLY, if they fix Con #2: Managers who undervalue and micromanage their nurses. Managers need to be selected with much stricter criteria. To manage a unit they need at least 5 years of nursing experience ON THAT UNIT, so that they understand the challenges their nurses are facing and can actively advocate for the employees.
