Pros

Very flexible work schedule; not much of project work; we can conduct academic type fundamental research; possibility to attend leading conferences and present your research results; publishing in leading research journals is considered as work achievement

Cons

Salaries are lower than in other communications (and related) companies. For example Qualcomm and Huawei pays visibly more. University professors are also paid better now days. Google and Facebook pay much more. Because of that good researchers are actively leaving Bell Labs, and good new ones do not want to come here.

Pros

Good benefits. Some flexibility.

Cons

Never profitable and always cutting to fix revenue. Trying to execute on strategies that go against the core makeup of the company with people who lack the knowledge or will to change. Not a growth company. Raises and bonuses tend to be small and way too much work and responsibility for the pay. If you work in the US, your job will likely be cut and moved to low cost centers in Europe. US always gets cut first.
