Pros

Stable and predictable stress free work environment and practices. Good place if you are interested in routine type work experience, self-motivated to learn and prepare for career move elsewhere. Just be careful, you better plan to retire because if you work here long you won’t be marketable elsewhere.

Cons

There are disconnects in strategy and execution. Executive management is doing reasonable job in defining vision and laying out the strategy, however, middle management (Directors, AVPs) lack the ability to understand, not ready for any change, innovation or simple views of how things roll up. Do no harm, take no risk, do nothing and control others by policies and procedures. Lot of smoke screens, no accountability, repackaging of old legacy technologies – pigs with lipsticks.

Pros

Respected company, here to stay, overall well run Variety of products (one stop shopping) Sr. Management seems to listen - employee survey results from last year seem to have made an impression as they made changes to the performance review process and job families, attempt at illustrating career paths have been made

Cons

Too many politics - if you're not 'in' you're ignored Weak management/leadership, employee sometimes left to determine what to do regarding goals and objectives which can cause confusion overall in the department. Some decisions take way too long to be made (months?!?!)

Pros

Decent pay and good benefits. Prior to the last two waves of layoffs, it was not difficult to maintain a good work/life balance.

Cons

Information Technology is treated as an expense to be reduced, rather than a strategic asset to be developed. If you are a low to mid level developer, you will most likely be outsourced. MetLife was aggressively outsourcing IT jobs before the current economic crisis, and now the current crisis gives management the perfect opportunity to accelerate that trend. The current performance review system is a farce. Talented people, hard workers often get a mediocre rating simply due to the whim of a manager who may have never met the person or reviewed his or her work in detail.
