Pros

Variety of therapeutic areas and stimulating projects to grow experience.

Cons

There is an imbalance between scientific employees who keep their knowledge current and managers who are admin in nature but get promoted and need to upgrade their skills to appear competent in front of clients. Covance does not offer a collaborative environment among project teams and staff pin each to the wall when they can in order to look like they are performing well. The performance mgmt process is not consistent due to varying managing styles of line managers who sometimes have up to 30 direct reports, leave Covance in some instances and cannot cope with developing employees and merely rely on bottom-line metrics to rate performance. It is difficult to prove yourself in this company and it is frustrating eroding motivation.

Pros

Lots of projects, average benefits, matrix organization with many different business units (all of which act like separate units). The experience looks good on your resume. If you like administrative work and not actually doing your job, this is for you.

Cons

Managerial hierarchy like no other, micromanagement run amuck, lack of technical competence in senior management, employees burdened with corporate administrative tasks, they have GMs and VPs who do not know the industry of the business unit they run. No work/life balance. They take advantage of the salaried employees and pass it off as a hard working culture.
