Jealously guarded fiefdoms

Pros

Interesting technology. Non-managers are great people.

Cons

This place is a toxic den of petty tyrants. It grinds up people and spits out their dried-out husks after squeezing every last drop of motivation, ingenuity, and self-respect. The only people with longevity are managers who, often by virtue of outlasting their peers, have risen in the ranks. Once situated, they jealously guard their little domains. They actively undermine anyone deemed a threat to their power. Lots of petty power struggles. Lots of passive aggression. People who want to maintain a pleasant work life soon learn to keep their heads down. If you speak up and try to improve things you'll often find out the things needing improving are intentionally dysfunctional due to some petty power struggle between managers.

Pros

- The people that work in the department are great. All very smart and hard-working people. - San Diego is a decent location

Cons

The management team is horrible. The VP makes up random goals with no thought as to how they will affect the team that actually does the work. The managers then apply extreme pressure to meet the quota for cases and get your perfect survey score because they want to make him happy. Then they all sit in their offices (VP isn't even in the same building) and never come out. Extremely unrealistic numbers without working all day, every day. Promotions are whack. You get 1 review a year, and they promote people randomly and not based on their knowledge about what matters....Websense's products. It's easier to get hired in at a high level then start out working at the bottom and going up. If you want to get anything you deserve, you have to fight tooth and nail for it. You'll be doing the job of 1 or 2 levels higher than you, but you won't get the pay. Everything else.
