Pros

It paid me while I worked there, I worked very hard and thus learned a lot about fasteners and equipment.

Cons

Where to start? My career started with just our store manager and I, as well as one associate who was leaving, to run the entire store. Understaffed and overworked, and underappreciated. I learned fast and soon we were meeting Fastenal goals. However, after a year of employment my store manager changed and it all went downhill. The new store manager had very little experience with Fastenal when he started. He made a lot of mistakes which got blamed on me. He would sit in his office all day and not go on his sales calls. He tried to force me to stay after hours, unpaid. He had to have everything his way, which was often incorrect. Instead of working to solve problems, he and two other managers ( DM and rm) placed all of the blame on me. They would constantly delegate tasks without coordination to me. I literally had three managers directing me around every single day as well as having me train three part time employees, answer all phone calls, handle the point of sale, etc.In all, far too much for one person. They wrote me up and terminated my full time position soon after I trained in the part timers. Their reasons? "Took too many notes (from calls etc of course I take notes), notes all over the place (they gave my desk to a part timer and she moved my notes off of it) and other bogus things." For the record, even though it was tough we often met or exceeded all of Fastenals store goals including sales and contacts. All of my blood, swear and tears was destroyed just so they could save money having part time employees versus my full time. I truly despise this company and their practices. Oh yeah, fraternization happened to me with this company as well. One part time employee told me that the managers were calling me an idiot and worse while she was with them.

Pros

If you can find good customers, who pay their bill, on time, Fastenal will not raid your check. Your coworkers are like war buddies, if they make it long enough to learn they become like family

Cons

They take your money when customers do not pay, they want you to work hours without pay, hire people who know little if anything about the products, employee turn over is worst I have ever seen, the managers are children, sexual harassments and hostile work environment is rampid, very little help and if you get it all they want is to figure out how to milk more from you, manangers above store level are way out of touch, upper managment is truly arrogant, product managers are ignorant to what they buy and options in the market, this list can go forever

Pros

- Industrial Sales Experience - Provide vehicle during business hours - Job opportunities - Experience working with a large High Performance Organisation

Cons

- Low base pay, and comissions are a joke. (unless you have big accounts assigned to you) - There are many job opportunities, not 'career' opportunities. (They create more part-time jobs, than full-time jobs) - Incompetence in upper and middle management. - Life/work balance suffers, especially if you're part of an underperforming store (where they don't pay for overtime) - Too many hats to wear (as an OSP, and/or GM), I was doing everything from sweeping the showroom floor to handling collections; and I was out on the road getting sales on a daily basis. - Stores are grossly understaffed and il-equipped for the work that needs to be done. - Unrealistic expectations - Comraderie will get you ahead in this company, hard work doesn't matter. - High turn-over, they constantly change employees (because they usually hire PT's, and not professionals) - Poor customer service retention. Fastenal is an industrial sales company that is also a high performance organisation. This means, they want to do more with less. They don't mind not paying salaries that are close to the national average because they can find someone else to do the work for a better price. They are only loyal to their shareholders.
