Pros

-Initial 3 month period there is overtime -Driving a Dodge Ram! -Great sales experience; territory management, B2B, cold calling, account managing... all sales experiences here will equate to greater success in the future -Meeting with blue collar customers (more laid back, friendly, outgoing) -Traveling occasionally to locations such as Wynona, MN (loved it there, met many great people that work for the company), Indianapolis, Orlando, etc -Great week long training in Wynona... very informative, will learn many sales techniques

Cons

Where to start... -Poor pay and commission/bonus structure -I was told I would be an outside sales associate, yet I'm stuck working in the store 90% of the time -Horrible upper management that makes false promises -Never able to handle any account that performs over $500 month -I was told branch I'd be going into is successful (it was bottom performing branch) -Managers are often egomaniacal and do not care about their employees -You WILL meet some absolutely rude customers (not Fastenal's fault) -INSULTING christmas bonus (a box of candy? Wow, thanks Fastenal) -Insane amount of competition out there

Great school but do not give your life to them

Pros

Great place to learn, if you have a good DM, you will always be challenged to make yourself a better employee. I have learned alot on lean management, ROA, ROI and simply managing people and put these skills to action. Its a great place to start if you cant go to university and want to properly learn how to run a business.

Cons

I really don't get the feeling they care about employees. Well, actually, they just don't. If they get a bad month they simply cut part timer hours without notice to leverage and make it a good month (the manager will have to put in extra hours to get jobs done), if that is not enough they will simply fire them and then the OSP's (the weakest links will go first), and this is not "downsizing" or "laying off" due to a bad year or something, it is simply firing people to cut spending on employees to save a single month!. Then when things get better, they hire new ones and the wheel goes on and on. We are also constantly threatened that we will lose our jobs if we don't fix "what ever is on their mind". Yeah, "what ever is on their mind" changes every week, you are never "safe" at fastenal, no matter how good you are. Great school but they do not deserve your life of effort.

Pros

Pay is average (if you work overtime) and full benefits are nice. Flexible schedule in some cases. Advancement is based on sales numbers which makes sense, you do get what you work for.

Cons

Being a women in this company makes advancement seem unlikely if you are not living near or able to drive to corp. head quarters. Can't help but feel the 'good old boys' atmosphere EVERYDAY. When someone doesn't hit sales numbers for some reason they don't get fired they just get moved around to a different store or a different position. I understand that thought process if it's happening just once but for it happen to someone multiple times and they are never let-go or removed from sales... at some point management should man up and fire/demote the person.
