Pros

FllipKey, or TAVR, as it has become, is a fairly decent place to work, offering: - Good pay, relative to the Boston area - Outstanding benefits - High traffic, big data website presents interesting challenges - B2B, B2C, and Internal web interfaces allow varied experience - Lots of very experienced developers who share knowledge freely - Exceptionally intelligent, very friendly people across the organization

Cons

- Execs have little interaction with indiv. contributors, don't understand of how to motivate - Focus is completely on ROI and parity with competitors, NOT on building great products - Tech stack is stale, employing lots of old and lesser-used tech (like prototype js) - Colleagues are uninspired due to stale tech and boring organizational goals - There's little positive reinforcement for putting in the extra effort - Due to the above the codebase has been hacked together, with high technical debt - There is virtually no career development, in a shrinking team with fixed leadership

Thank you for your feedback. As you noted, we are very proud to be a company that is made up of bright, hard-working and outgoing people, who are always willing to share their knowledge with others. In terms of career opportunities, or lack thereof, I was a little surprised and sorry to hear that you think there aren’t any. Within the Engineering team alone, we have promoted a number of individuals over the last few months. We also have no shortage of opportunities for people to take the lead on projects and teams, and we try to encourage people to take advantage of these opportunities as we want our employees to continue to grow and we want to reward initiative. You’ve raised some good points about our tech stack as well as our communication. In regard to our tech stack, this is something we are aiming to fix. We have already begun looking at the various ways we can improve it, all while continuing to deliver a great product. And while we have made some strides with our communication, we have more we want to do in this area. Thanks again, Tracey

Pros

The people you get to work with are genuinely great, and the work-life balance remains fairly solid. In the past, the company attracted top-tier engineering talent from the most reputable tech firms, and the expectations were high but rewarding. A lot of that collaborative culture still exists among the engineers. You will be surrounded by capable individuals who want to do good work.

Cons

The company has been battered by unresolved structural issues over the last decade. The core meta-search business was crippled when Google altered its algorithms to prioritize its own travel products, effectively choking off the organic traffic Tripadvisor depended on. Combined with the impact of COVID-19, leadership tried launching new products to escape this SEO reliance, but those attempts consistently missed the mark. Now, the rapid adoption of LLMs is delivering another severe blow. Users no longer need traditional meta-search to plan travel. The core Tripadvisor product has essentially become a legacy cash cow, with the Experiences division (Viator) being the primary engine keeping the business afloat. Following the departure of the former CEO, thousands of highly skilled employees have left through attrition or ongoing restructuring. Layoffs have become a grim constant, happening once or twice a year. Even if you manage to avoid the cuts, the compensation structure is no longer competitive for the tech industry, and RSUs have virtually dried up. Because of the abysmal direction and the very high chance you won't survive the next round of looming layoffs, I strongly recommend avoiding this company as a new hire.
